Add N to (X) were an English electronic music band formed in London in 1994. The original members were Andrew Aveling, Barry Smith (a.k.a. Barry 7) and Ann Shenton.[1]Steven Claydon replaced Aveling in 1997.

After several releases on small labels, they signed to the independent label Mute Records in 1998, and achieved modest commercial success before splitting in 2003.

Several of their songs and music videos are adult/sex-related: the video for "Metal Fingers in My Body" is an animated short featuring a woman having sex with a robot,[2] and their video for "Plug Me In" features porn actresses playing with sex toys.

Biography

In 1994, Andrew Aveling met Justin Anderson from Freaky Realistic, and together they started a band named Radix Couplment. Andrew was dating Ann Shenton at this time, and got her involved on the project. Andrew then asked his friend Barry Smith (a former Radio Prague DJ)[3] if he too would be interested in joining. They then spent some time gigging under this name before a fall out which led to Anderson's departure from the band. There being only three remaining Andrew then renamed the group Add N to X, based upon a mathematical formula.[4] They kept the name but placed brackets around the X for legal reasons. They then enlisted Steven Claydon, who remained with the group until its dissolution. The band released Vero Electronics (1996) on the Blow Up label.[4]

1997 saw the band twice awarded 'Single of the Week' by the NME (for "The Black Regent" and "King Wasp").[3]

Second album On the Wires of Our Nerves was released in 1998,[4] and was described as "like Stereolab/Suicide with a rocket shoved up their rectum".[3] The album was played heavily by BBC Radio 1DJMary Anne Hobbs on her show, The Breezeblock.[3]

El grupo actuaba en directo con regularidad, a menudo complementando su formación principal de tres miembros con uno o dos bateristas acústicos, y a veces con músicos adicionales que tocaban sintetizadores y/o guitarra eléctrica. El equipo utilizado en directo incluía el EMS Synthi AKS (que solía lanzar Barry 7), el Korg MS-20 , el Moog Rogue , el EDP Wasp , el Omnichord y el ARP 2600 .

A menudo utilizaban diseños artísticos distintivos para los vídeos y las portadas de los discos, un collage fetichista de imágenes sexuales con equipos electrónicos analógicos, basado en parte en la película y el libro Demon Seed .

La banda firmó con Mute Records y lanzó tres álbumes más, Avant Hard , [ 4 ] Add Insult to Injury y Loud Like Nature . También lanzaron el sencillo "Little Black Rocks in the Sun", que se publicó en  vinilo hexagonal de 10 pulgadas. Según se informa, Shenton se sintió abrumado por las presiones de la gira Loud Like Nature , y o bien dejó el grupo o fue despedido. En 2003, Smith y Claydon continuaron de gira por Estados Unidos sin Shenton. La banda se separó poco después. Barry Smith dirige la tienda y el sello Horseglue Records con su socio Ethan Reid. Ann Shenton [ 5 ] ha formado un nuevo grupo, Large Number, y un sello discográfico, White Label Music . Steven Claydon ahora es conocido por su obra artística y en 2006 fue incluido en una exposición colectiva en la Tate Modern . Aveling ahora toca en Littl'ans .
