Alberta is a town in Brunswick County, Virginia, United States. The population was 302 at the 2020 census.[4]

History

For much of the 20th century, Alberta marked the junction of two railroad mainlines. The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad from Petersburg, Virginia to Ridgeway Junction (today Norlina, North Carolina) was completed in 1900, at which point it was merged into the Seaboard Air Line (SAL).[5] By 1914, the population of Alberta was estimate by the railroad to be somewhere around 100.[6] The Seaboard line (dubbed the "S-line" after later mergers) continued to operate into the 1980s, and today Alberta is along the abandoned portion of the CSX Norlina Subdivision. The Virginian Railway opened in 1907 from Norfolk to Victoria, Virginia, passing through Alberta (with through-service from the coalfields of Appalachia starting in 1909). The Virginian continued in use until it was gradually abandoned following a merger with Norfolk and Western in the later half of the 20th century.

Hobson's Choice and Rocky Run Methodist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[7]

Geography

Alberta is located in north-central Brunswick County along U.S. Route 1. Interstate 85 passes south of the original portion of the town. The town limits extend southwest along Route 1 and I-85 to Virginia State Route 46 and Southside Virginia Community College.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Alberta has a total area of 2.15 square miles (5.56 km2), of which 2.14 square miles (5.53 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2), or 0.61%, is water.[8]

De los 128 hogares, el 26,6% tenía hijos menores de 18 años, el 44,5% eran parejas casadas que vivían juntas, el 20,3% tenía una mujer como cabeza de familia sin cónyuge presente y el 32,8% no eran familias. El 29,7% de los hogares eran unipersonales y el 14,1% eran una persona de 65 años o más. El tamaño promedio del hogar era de 2,39 personas y el tamaño promedio de la familia era de 2,93 personas.

La distribución por edades fue la siguiente: 26,8% menores de 18 años, 5,2% entre 18 y 24 años, 27,1% entre 25 y 44 años, 24,2% entre 45 y 64 años, y 16,7% de 65 años o más. La mediana de edad fue de 39 años. Por cada 100 mujeres, había 86,6 hombres. Por cada 100 mujeres de 18 años o más, había 75,0 hombres.

El ingreso medio por hogar fue de $27,361 y el ingreso medio por familia fue de $31,875. Los hombres tuvieron un ingreso medio de $27,250, frente a $20,833 para las mujeres. El ingreso per cápita de la ciudad fue de $14,607. Aproximadamente el 10.8% de las familias y el 16.3% de la población se encontraban por debajo del umbral de pobreza , incluyendo el 21.1% de los menores de dieciocho años y el 14.5% de los mayores de sesenta y cinco.
