Producción

El álbum fue producido por Harding y Chris Von Sneidern . [ 6 ] Harding evitó escribir sobre sí mismo, prefiriendo contar historias en sus canciones. [ 7 ] Empleó bucles de cinta, samples, e-bow, mellotron y campanas tubulares en algunas de las pistas. [ 8 ] [ 9 ] Awake es un álbum conceptual libre, donde las canciones ocurren después de que un despertador ha sonado. [ 10 ] Kurt Bloch y Scott McCaughey contribuyeron con la guitarra. [ 11 ] [ 12 ] Kelly Hogan cantó en "It's All My Fault". [ 6 ] "Miss Fortune" trata sobre un millonario que descubre un bebé en una trinchera. Recepción crítica

Pitchfork escribió que "demasiadas canciones carecen de carácter real y se deslizan lentamente hacia el territorio genérico del rock ligero". [ 16 ] El Times Union consideró el álbum "una deslumbrante y onírica colección de canciones pop extraídas de la vasta y vívida imaginación de Harding". [ 17 ] El Chicago Tribune señaló que "gran parte del disco conserva la típica combinación de Harding, libre de tecno, de letras irónicas con melodías atractivas". [ 18 ]

The San Antonio Express-News called it "a masterful effort, its pointed commentary contrasting with a melodic, folk-rock backing."[19]The Plain Dealer panned the album, writing that "most of the tunes are typical introspective folkie singer-songwriter fare, ranging from the interminable drone of 'Blood Sweat Tears and Come' to the halfhearted country of 'It's All My Fault'."[20]The San Diego Union-Tribune considered Awake "his strongest effort yet, his sparse folk tunes ... combined with a low-fidelity atmosphere more common to bands like Folk Implosion and Pavement."[21]

AllMusic wrote that Harding's "acid-tongued, always-clever phrasing, folky leanings, and strong sense of melody show him to be one of the finest (and unfairly overlooked) songwriters of the '90s."[15]
