Bolette Puggaard

Bolette Cathrine Frederikke Puggaard née Hage (1798–1847) was a landscape painter and one of very few 19th-century Danish women whose art extended beyond flower paintings.^[1] She and her husband, the merchant and shipowner Hans Puggaard, are remembered for their philanthropic activities as well as supporting many of the painters of the Danish Golden Age.^[2][3]

Born on 7 February 1798 in Stege on the island of Møn, Bolette Cathrine Frederikke Hage was the daughter of the merchant Christopher Friedenreich Hage (1759–1849) and Christiane Arnette Just (1778–1866).^[2] She was the eldest of the family's 10 children. In 1830, she received private tuition in painting under the celebrated artist Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg.^[2]

On 13 August 1816, she married the wealthy merchant Hans Puggaard (1788–1866) with whom she enjoyed a substantial degree of freedom, allowing her to develop her interest and proficiency in landscape painting. Together with her husband, she socialized with many of the most prominent cultural and intellectual figures of the day, inviting them to their home on Store Kongensgade in central Copenhagen or their country home Skovgaard in Ordrup.^[3] The houses were exquisitely decorated and the walls covered with the best paintings of the time. The couple were among the patrons who supported the leading contemporary Danish artists, including among many others Constantin Hansen, Wilhelm Marstrand, Jørgen Roed, Jørgen Sonne and Herman Wilhelm Bissen.^[2]

Tras padecer tuberculosis durante un tiempo, falleció de gripe el 10 de noviembre de 1847 en Copenhague, antes de poder presenciar la abolición del absolutismo. Durante su visita a Roma con su familia entre 1835 y 1836, conoció a varios pintores daneses y pintó numerosos paisajes. Ella y su esposo entablaron una estrecha amistad con el escultor Bertel Thorvaldsen . Ambos fueron los principales impulsores y artífices de la creación del Museo Thorvaldsen en Copenhague.

Bolette Puggaard expuso en la Exposición de Primavera de Charlottenborg en 1838, 1844 y 1845. Sus obras fueron incluidas posteriormente en la Exposición de Mujeres de Copenhague de 1895. ^{[ 2 ]}

Bolette también estaba comprometida políticamente y se oponía firmemente al absolutismo . Cuando se inauguró el Museo Thorvaldsen, colocó la bandera tricolor francesa en lo alto del edificio, afirmando estar dispuesta a defender esta acción incluso ante el rey si fuera necesario. Su opinión era que « fue Thorvaldsen quien trajo la libertad a las artes, y es nuestro más noble deber luchar por ella ». Su pasión por la democracia se inspiró en su hermano Johannes Dam Hage , un destacado defensor de la abolición del absolutismo en Dinamarca, quien se suicidó tras ser condenado a cadena perpetua a la censura. Su yerno, Orla Lehmann , casado con su hija Maria y posteriormente uno de los principales autores de la Constitución liberal danesa de 1848 , también había sido encarcelado por sus ideas democráticas.
