Wikipedia es una enciclopedia en línea gratuita, multilingüe, basada en wikis y de código abierto, editada y mantenida por una comunidad de editores voluntarios . Comenzó el 15 de enero de 2001 como una enciclopedia en inglés . Ese mismo año se crearon ediciones en otros idiomas: las ediciones en alemán y catalán se crearon el 16 de marzo, [ 1 ] la edición en francés se creó el 23 de marzo, [ 2 ] y la edición en sueco se creó el 23 de mayo. [ 3 ] A julio de 2026 , se habían creado artículos de Wikipedia en 364 ediciones, de las cuales 348 estaban activas , 16 cerradas y 11 trasladadas a Wikimedia Incubator . [ 4 ]

El comité de idiomas de Meta-Wiki gestiona las políticas para la creación de nuevos proyectos de Wikimedia . Para ser elegible, un idioma debe tener un código ISO 639 válido , ser "suficientemente único" y contar con un "número suficiente de usuarios fluidos". [ 5 ]

Los proyectos de Wikipedia varían en la forma en que dividen los dialectos y variantes . Por ejemplo, la Wikipedia en inglés incluye la mayoría de las variedades modernas del inglés, incluyendo el inglés americano y el inglés británico . Códigos de edición de Wikipedia

Cada proyecto de Wikipedia tiene un código, que se utiliza como subdominio de wikipedia.org . Los códigos se ajustan principalmente a los códigos de dos letras ISO 639-1 o a los códigos de tres letras ISO 639-2 / ISO 639-3 , con preferencia por un código de dos letras si está disponible.     • (1) Sometimes people using the exact date of the first edit of the main page like for the Ossetian Wikipedia where it is 28 Feb 2005, see the revision history of the os main page. In this case, it coincides with the month in which the os-Wikipedia became "active"; see the first appearance in the 2005 monthly Wikipedia statistics on 1 March 2005, so it became active the month before.
    • (2) Another interpretation of a "launch date" is the date when the Wikipedia became "active" meaning the date leaving the Wikimedia Incubator. This is represented in the first appearance in the statistics with the official article count (and the {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} magic word). This initial appearance can be determined retrospectively using the historical data from the following statistics:
      • from Jan 2001 to Oct 2008: see Wikipedia:Multilingual year statistics for monthly article counts(from Jan 2001 to Oct 2018 there is a complete monthly list but with rounded data on stats.wikimedia.org (archive, screenshot))
      • from 29 Oct 2007 to 12 Oct 2022: see the revision history of meta:List of Wikipedias/Table
      • since 8 June 2020: see the revision history of commons:data:Wikipedia statistics/data.tab
    • (3) For other Wikipedias like the German Wikipedia and some others there is a third interpretation. There the lauch date is mentioned as 16 March 2001 but (1) the de main page was created/first edited the 28 August 2002 and (2) the first appearance in the 2001 Wikipedia statistics was the 1 June 2001, meaning that the de-wiki became "active" the month before, so May 2001.
    The difference between interpretation (1) and (2) can be even greater: Like the Ladin Wikipedia for example was launched the 17 August 2020 (see reference there). This corresponds exactly to the date on which it becomes “active” – represented by the first appearance in the wikimedia article count statistics, what was the 18(17) August 2020. On the other side the lld main page was already created/first edited on 23 August 2005, fifteen years earlier!
