Claude Gillot (1673–1722) — Cuatro figuras de la Commedia dell'arte : Tres caballeros y Pierrot , c. 1715. Personajes arquetípicos de la Commedia dell'arte italiana — que asignaban a cada personaje un vestuario estándar, fácilmente distinguible— se extendieron a muchos tipos de teatro, narración dramática y ficción.

Un personaje tipo es un personaje dramático o literario que representa un arquetipo genérico de manera convencional y simplificada, y que aparece recurrentemente en numerosas obras de ficción. [ 1 ] La siguiente lista identifica algunos de estos estereotipos y proporciona ejemplos. También se incluyen algunos arquetipos de personajes , los fundamentos más universales de los personajes de ficción.

Algunos personajes que se presentaron inicialmente como personajes bien desarrollados se convierten posteriormente en personajes estereotipados en otras obras; por ejemplo, el personaje de Ebenezer Scrooge de Cuento de Navidad , en quien se basa el estereotipo del "avaro" y cuyo nombre se ha convertido en sinónimo del mismo.
