La mayoría de las unidades de la Real Fuerza Aérea (RAF) se identifican mediante un código de escuadrón de combinación alfabética o alfanumérica de dos caracteres . Por lo general, ese código está pintado en el avión que pertenece a ese escuadrón. El código de escuadrón suele presentarse junto con una letra o carácter individual para formar un indicativo de llamada para el avión en particular. La ubicación de la combinación de indicativos de llamada generalmente ha sido en el fuselaje trasero junto al escudo de la RAF .
En los casos en que un número inusualmente grande de aeronaves compone el escuadrón, se han utilizado múltiples códigos de escuadrón.
Otras fuerzas aéreas, especialmente las de otros países de la Commonwealth , han utilizado a menudo sistemas de identificación similares. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial , cuando se incorporaron a la RAF unidades de otras fuerzas aéreas, como los escuadrones del Artículo XV (también conocidos como "escuadrones de la serie 400"), sus códigos de escuadrón se modificaban a menudo para evitar confusiones con las unidades de la RAF.

Radio call signs
Transport Command 'O' series
Transport Command RAF applied the following three letter call-signs to its aircraft from 1944. Individual aircraft were given letter suffixes, making the code a four letter sequence.
Transport Command 'MO' series
From 1945, RAF Transport Command pre-fixed the three letter call-signs with M. With individual aircraft allocated letter suffixes, the call-signs became five letter sequences.[3]
