Bandera de Gibraltar

La bandera de Gibraltar es un estandarte alargado de armas basado en el escudo de armas de Gibraltar , otorgado por Real Decreto de la Reina Isabel I de Castilla el 10 de julio de 1502. ^{[ 1 ]} Gibraltar es único ya que es el único Territorio Británico de Ultramar cuya bandera no presenta la Union Jack de ninguna forma, aunque esta última se ondea ampliamente como bandera independiente dentro de la colonia.

"Un escudo en el que los dos tercios superiores serán de campo blanco y sobre dicho campo se colocará un castillo rojo, y debajo de dicho castillo, en el otro tercio del escudo , que deberá ser de campo rojo con una línea blanca entre el castillo y dicho campo rojo, habrá una llave dorada que cuelga de una cadena de dicho castillo, como se muestra aquí". ^{[ 2 ]}

La bandera fue regularizada en 1982 y está formada por dos franjas horizontales blancas (la superior, de doble ancho) y rojas, con un castillo rojo de tres torres en el centro de la franja blanca; ^{[ 3 ]} colgando de la puerta del castillo hay una llave dorada centrada en la franja roja. La bandera se diferencia de la de otros territorios británicos de ultramar , ya que no es un pabellón británico ni incluye la Union Jack en ninguna forma. El castillo no se parece a ninguno de Gibraltar, sino que representa la fortaleza de Gibraltar . Se dice que la llave simboliza la importancia de la fortaleza, ya que Gibraltar fue considerada la llave de España por los moros y los españoles, y posteriormente la llave del Mediterráneo por los británicos. ^{[ 4 ]}

The flag is flown throughout Gibraltar, sometimes officially alongside the Union Flag and the Commonwealth Flag. Prominent places which fly the flag include the frontier with Spain, at the top of The Rock and on the Parliament Building.^[5]

The flag is a symbol of Gibraltarian nationalism and is very popular among Gibraltarians. For the Gibraltar National Day (10 September), many Gibraltar homes and offices hang the flag from their windows and balconies, and some individuals even wear and dress their vehicles with the flag for national day celebrations. This was also seen during the 2004 celebrations of the tercentenary of British Gibraltar.

Gibraltarian students attending university abroad have been known to take Gibraltarian flags with them, putting them up in university accommodation rooms and hanging them from windows.

A Lego flag of Gibraltar 4 metres (13 ft) high and 8 metres (26 ft) long can be seen at the John Mackintosh Hall, which is a cultural centre housing the public library as well as exhibition rooms and a theatre. At the time of its construction, the Lego flag of Gibraltar was the largest flag ever to be made from Lego bricks with a total of 393,857 bricks being used.^[6]
