Los premios Royal Television Society Programme Awards (a menudo denominados premios RTS) buscan reconocer a programas o personas que hayan realizado una contribución positiva y sustancial a su género: ya sea porque su contenido u originalidad en la forma ha hecho avanzar el género de alguna manera, o incluso ha creado un nuevo género; o porque su calidad ha establecido estándares que otros creadores de programas pueden emular y de los que pueden aprender.

Además de los premios nacionales y los premios Craft & Design Awards , la Royal Television Society también organiza varias ceremonias de premios regionales en todo el Reino Unido e Irlanda. [ 1 ]

Categorías de premios

Los premios originales de la Royal Television Society Programme Awards se remontan a 1975, cuando solo existían siete categorías. En 1989, se revisaron las categorías y se otorgaron los premios correspondientes a la edición de 1988. Ese mismo año se introdujeron por primera vez las nominaciones para algunas categorías. Desde 2016, los premios se han centrado principalmente en producciones nacionales, siendo Fargo la última ganadora de la categoría Internacional en 2015. En 2023, el número de categorías ascendía a 30.

Controversias

En febrero de 2017, el presentador Piers Morgan se retiró como anfitrión después de solo tres días, alegando una campaña pública que lo tachaba de perjudicial e inapropiado para el evento. [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

Los ganadores de los Premios del Programa RTS no se seleccionan por votación popular, sino que son elegidos por jurados compuestos por expertos y profesionales del sector. En 2016, la composición de los jurados se modificó para incluir a más mujeres y personas de minorías étnicas. De aproximadamente 200 jurados, el 52 % eran mujeres y el 27 % pertenecían a minorías étnicas . Este avance hacia una mayor diversidad se produjo a raíz de la campaña #OscarsSoWhite. [ 4 ] En la entrega de los premios de 2020, la composición general del jurado era del 56 % femenina y del 32 % perteneciente a minorías étnicas. [ 5 ]

Este año se introdujeron dos nuevas categorías de actuación: actor de reparto masculino y actriz de reparto femenina.

Este año se retomaron los eventos con público en vivo tras el levantamiento de las restricciones por la COVID-19. El comediante Graham Norton recibió el premio a la trayectoria destacada de 2020, que no había podido recoger en su momento debido a que padecía COVID-19.

Por segundo año consecutivo, debido a las restricciones por la COVID-19, la ceremonia de entrega de premios de 2021 se celebró a puerta cerrada y sin público en directo. En 2021 se creó una nueva categoría de premios para programas de comedia. Este año se otorgó un premio especial a John McVay, Sara Geater, Max Rumney, Hakan Kousetta y su equipo de PACT (Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television) en reconocimiento a las dificultades y retos que afrontó el sector de la producción independiente durante la pandemia.

Debido a las restricciones relacionadas con la COVID-19, la ceremonia de entrega de premios de 2020 se celebró a puerta cerrada y sin público en directo. Este año se eliminó el premio a la mejor serie dramática para dar paso a dos nuevos premios: el premio a la mejor miniserie y el premio RTS al canal del año.

En 2016 se recuperó un único premio revelación para sustituir a los dos premios (uno al trabajo entre bastidores y otro al trabajo en pantalla) que se habían entregado por última vez en 2008. El premio de ficción infantil fue retirado, al igual que el premio internacional.

En 2014, se eliminó el premio al programa de naciones y regiones para dar paso a dos premios relacionados con el deporte: programa deportivo y presentador, comentarista o experto deportivo.

En 2011 se revirtió la decisión de 2009: se restablecieron dos categorías de documentales y se eliminó el premio a la mejor serie documental, junto con el premio al mejor programa multicanal.

En 2009, los dos premios separados para documentales se fusionaron para dar cabida a un premio para series de no ficción, creado para reconocer el crecimiento y la popularidad del género de las series de telerrealidad.

In 2006 the two newcomer awards (behind the scenes and on-screen) were each renamed as the breakthrough awards. No RTS Gold Medal recipient is recorded for this year.

2005 winners (Programme Awards 2004)[76][77][78][79]

In 2005 the event award was once again dropped to make way for a new digital channel programme award and the writing award was split into two awards; writer: comedy, and writer: drama. No RTS Gold Medal recipient is recorded for this year.

2004 winners (Programme Awards 2003)[81][82][83]

In 2004 the acquired award introduced the previous year was redesignated as the international award and the serials & single drama award was once again split back into two separate awards, namely the drama serial award and the single drama award. No RTS Gold Medal recipient is recorded for this year.

2003 winners (Programme Awards 2002)[85][86][87]

2003 saw two completely new categories introduced in the shape of the acquired programme award and the comedy performance award. An event award was also reintroduced, similar to the live event award that had been last bestowed in 1998. The team award was retired in this year.

2002 winners (Programme Awards 2001)[89][90]

In 2002 three new awards were introduced; the soap and continuing drama award; the science & natural history award; and the history award. Other changes saw the children's drama and the children's entertainment categories merged to become the children's fictional award; and the drama serial award merged with the single drama award. Awards for documentary strand and regional documentary were retired.

This year saw a special recognition award for the Channel 4 comedy series Father Ted to mark Dermot Morgan's passing in February 1998. The features award was split into two categories: Daytime and Primetime, and the live event award was discontinued.

In 1998 the following new awards were instituted: Documentary strand; Features; Newcomer – behind the scenes; and Newcomer – on screen.

In 1989 the awards categories underwent a major revision and several new categories were created. These new awards were retrospectively conferred for the award year of 1988. It was also in 1989 that nominations were introduced in certain categories for the very first time.[99]
