Un spin-off en televisión es una nueva serie que contiene personajes o escenarios que se originaron en una serie anterior, pero con un enfoque, tono o temática diferente. Por ejemplo, la serie Frasier fue un spin-off de la serie anterior Cheers : el personaje Frasier Crane fue presentado como un personaje secundario en Cheers y se convirtió en el protagonista de su propia serie, ambientada en una ciudad diferente, en el spin-off. Los spin-offs son particularmente comunes en las comedias de situación . Un fenómeno relacionado, que no debe confundirse con el spin-off, es el crossover .

Algunos spin-offs se "diseñan" para introducir un nuevo personaje en la serie de televisión original, solo para que ese personaje sirva de eje central del nuevo spin-off; ese episodio de la serie original se conoce a menudo como un " piloto encubierto ". Por ejemplo, el personaje de Avery Ryan apareció en dos episodios de CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, ambientada en Las Vegas, antes del estreno de CSI: Cyber . [ 1 ]

Un reestreno , una nueva versión de una serie preexistente, no es un spin-off. Este es el caso de Doctor Who , donde la serie de 2005 comienza con un nuevo Doctor pero mantiene la continuidad existente. Una excepción a esta regla se puede aplicar a series como Transformers, donde los límites de la continuidad se difuminan. Si se escribió un episodio piloto para televisión pero nunca se filmó, no se considera un spin-off. Cuando una serie cambia de nombre, no necesariamente es un spin-off.

Tampoco es una serie de reinicio , un término inventado recientemente para películas, que también puede ocurrir en televisión (por ejemplo, la serie Battlestar Galactica de 2003 es un reinicio, no un spin-off de la versión de 1978 [ 2 ] ). Esto se distingue de un reestreno en que hay poco o ningún intento de mantener la continuidad, o el reparto, con el original.
