The X is the thirteenth extended play by the South Korean boy group Monsta X. It was released by Starship Entertainment and distributed by Kakao Entertainment on September 1, 2025.

Background and release

The X is Monsta X's first EP since the release of Reason in 2023, as five of the members had served their mandatory military service between 2021 and 2025.[1]

The "X" in the album title is a reference both to the group's name and the Roman numeral for the number ten, referring to the group's ten-year history.[2] The EP also has six tracks to represent the group's six members.[3]

On August 18, Monsta X released "Do What I Want" with a music video, as a pre-release single.[1] The EP was released, with "N the Front" as the lead single alongside its music video, on September 1.[4]

On September 5, Monsta X released a digital deluxe version of the EP, that included a remix version of the lead single by Hyungwon under his DJ name called "N the Front (H.ONE Remix)".[5]

Composition

Joohoney, I.M, and Hyungwon participated in the writing and production of the EP. In addition to writing for his rap in "Savior" and "Catch Me Now", Joohoney co-wrote and produced the hip-hop tracks "Do What I Want" and "Tuscan Leather". I.M wrote for his rap part in "Do What I Want" and "Catch Me Now", while he co-wrote and produced the track "Savior".[6] Hyungwon co-wrote and produced "Fire & Ice", a track with an old school R&B vibe that would've fit into the New Jack Swing scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s.[3]

Critical reception

Maria Mata de Melodic lo describió como "una celebración ininterrumpida con una mezcla ecléctica de estilos". Mata también destacó el tema "Tuscan Leather" como uno de los más complejos del EP, ya que "tiene una letra atractiva, su sonido cambiante es lo que lo hace tan interesante, con un aire de hip-hop de la vieja escuela que se transforma sin problemas en pop melódico". Chyenne Tatum de Clash dijo que es "una fusión festiva de lo antiguo y lo nuevo, que combina algunos de los rasgos más emblemáticos de Monsta X con un territorio fresco e inexplorado que encaja perfectamente con su estilo" y elogió las letras, diciendo "No hay duda de que las letras de todo este álbum no han fallado". Tatum también calificó a "Tuscan Leather" como uno de los puntos fuertes del EP y describió "Fire & Ice" como "una mezcla estimulante de house, R&B y un toque de synth-pop que fácilmente la convierte en una de las entradas más dinámicas de The X ". Rendimiento comercial

El EP debutó en el número 5 de la lista semanal Circle Album Chart tras su lanzamiento. El sencillo principal "N the Front" entró en la lista semanal Circle Digital Chart en el número 65. Las demás canciones del álbum no aparecieron en la lista Digital Chart, pero todas entraron en su lista componente, la Circle Download Chart.
