Zealand Notch

Zealand Notch (el. 2457 ft./749 m.) is a mountain pass in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, United States. It is located in the towns of Bethlehem and Lincoln, near the northeastern corner of the Pemigewasset Wilderness. The center of the notch is traversed by hiking trails and is approximately 2 miles (3 km) from the nearest road. Zealand Pond, Zealand Falls, and the Zealand Falls hut are located near the height of land.

Similarly to Crawford Notch to the east, the main body of Zealand Notch comprises a steep-walled, U-shaped valley running southwards from the height of land. Whitewall Brook flows through the bottom of the notch, reaching the North Fork of the Pemigewasset River at the south end of the notch. Water from Whitewall Brook flows via branches and the main stem of the Pemigewasset to the Merrimack River and ultimately the Gulf of Maine. North of the notch's height of land, the Zealand River flows north to the Ammonoosuc River near the village of Twin Mountain, with the streamflow eventually reaching the Connecticut River and turning south again to ultimately reach Long Island Sound.

El desfiladero se encuentra entre Whitewall Mountain (3405  pies/1038 m) al este y Zeacliff (aprox. 3600  pies/1097 m), un brazo oriental de Zealand Mountain , al oeste. El Sendero de los Apalaches atraviesa Zealand Notch. Desde el oeste, el sendero (junto con el sendero Twinway) desciende desde Zeacliff pasando por Zealand Falls (una larga serie de repisas lisas de granito que terminan en una caída de 50 pies (15 m) sobre granito vertical) y Zealand Falls Hut hasta el centro del desfiladero. Aquí termina el Twinway, y el Sendero de los Apalaches gira hacia el sur y sigue el Sendero Ethan Pond a lo largo de una antigua vía férrea a través del desfiladero, junto a Whitewall Mountain, saliendo por el extremo sur del desfiladero y continuando hacia el este en dirección a Crawford Notch. Otros senderos en Zealand Notch incluyen el Sendero Zealand, que se aproxima a lo largo del río Zealand desde el norte; el Sendero Lend-a-Hand, que llega a la cabaña Zealand Falls desde Mount Hale al noroeste; y el Sendero Zeacliff, que desciende desde la cima de Zeacliff directamente por la pared del desfiladero hasta Whitewall Brook y el Sendero Ethan Pond. El Sendero A-Z se separa del Sendero Zealand justo al norte de la cima del desfiladero y se dirige hacia el este hasta Crawford Notch, en su punto más alto.
