Adoor Pankajam

Adoor Pankajam (1925 – 26 June 2010) was an Indian actress, in Malayalam movies. She hailed from Adoor in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala state.^[1] Mainly, she was a supporting actress and a comedian. Her sister Adoor Bhavani was also a Malayalam cinema actress.^[2]

Pankajam's most noted performance was in the national award winning film Chemmeen as "Nalla Pennu". She also did a pivotal role in India's first neo-realistic filmNewspaper Boy (1955). In 2008, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy honoured Pankajam and Bhavani for their overall contributions to theatre and drama.

She died at the age of 85 on 26 June 2010.^[3]

Adoor Pankajam was born to Adoor Paarappurathu Kunjuraman Pillai and Kunjoonjamma in 1925 and was the second child of 8 children.^[1] Her sister Adoor Bhavani also became famous later through plays and movies.

She could only study till 4th standard due to financial difficulties. But still she continued her music studies under Pandalam Krishnapillai Bhagavathar till the age of 11. By this time, she had done musical kacheri in most of the temples around her village.

At 12, she started acting in Kannur Kerala Kalanilayam troupe against the will of her parents. She acted in their play Madhumadhurayam on over 300 stages. Her next play was Rakthabhandham by a theater in Chengannoor. In this play, she did a comic role which was widely accepted.

Conoció a Devarajan Potti, el dueño de Kollam Bharatha Kalachandrika, mientras trabajaba con esta compañía y más tarde se casó con él. Potti fundó posteriormente otra compañía llamada Parthasarathy Theaters y, durante su tiempo con esta, recibió una invitación para actuar en películas.

Comenzó su carrera como actriz con la obra de teatro Madhu Madhuryam de Kalanilayam Theaters. Su primera película fue Premalekhanam , producida por Pappa Soman. Sin embargo, su primera película estrenada fue Vishappinte Vila , dirigida por Boban Kunchacko . Su última película fue Kunjikoonan , protagonizada por Dileep . Ha actuado en más de 400 películas a lo largo de su carrera.

En 1976, ella y su hermana Adoor Bhavani fundaron una compañía de teatro llamada Adoor Jaya Theaters. Sin embargo, más tarde las hermanas se separaron y Bhavani dejó el teatro. Pankajam continuó con la compañía junto a su esposo Devarajan Potti y la mantuvo activa durante más de 18 años.

En 2008, la Academia Kerala Sangeetha Nataka honró a Pankajam y Bhavani por sus contribuciones generales al teatro y el drama. También recibió el Premio de Cine Estatal de Kerala a la Segunda Mejor Actriz por su actuación en la película Sabarimala Ayyappan .
