Charles Alexander Nelson

Charles Alexander Nelson (14 de abril de 1839 - 13 de enero de 1933) ^{[ 1 ]} fue un bibliotecario y bibliógrafo estadounidense.

Nelson trabajó como ingeniero civil y empresario antes de interesarse por la biblioteconomía . De 1881 a 1888, trabajó en la publicación del catálogo de la Biblioteca Astor ^{[ 2 ]} en cuatro volúmenes. Luego se convirtió en el primer bibliotecario de la Biblioteca Memorial Howard de Nueva Orleans . De 1891 a 1893, trabajó en un catálogo para la Biblioteca Newberry en Chicago , y hasta 1909 fue bibliotecario adjunto de la Universidad de Columbia . Sus padres fueron Israel Potter y Jane (Capen) Nelson. Cursó sus primeros estudios en escuelas privadas e ingresó en la Cambridge High School cuando sus padres se mudaron a Cambridge, Massachusetts , en diciembre de 1855. Se matriculó en Harvard en 1857 y se graduó en 1860.

Pasó un año como tutor de latín y griego en una academia y estudió ingeniería civil durante un año en la Escuela Científica Lawrence . ^{[ 1 ]} Estudió biblioteconomía en la Biblioteca Universitaria de Boston y luego se dedicó a la enseñanza.

Nelson gave special study to library economics, and after 1881 had charge of a continuation catalog of the Astor Library.^[2] This work lasted until 1888, and the result was published in four volumes (1886-1888). On the completion of the catalog, he left the Astor Library and became the first librarian of the Howard Memorial Library of New Orleans. From 1891 to 1893 he worked on a catalog for the Newberry Library in Chicago, and until 1909 he was deputy librarian of Columbia University. From 1913 to 1926, he was on the staff of the Merchants' Association of New York, where he worked on an index-digest of its activities.^[1]

He was one of the founders, and in 1888 secretary, of the New York Library Club.^[2] He married Emma Norris, and they had two children.^[1]

In 1927 he was awarded American Library Association Honorary Membership.
