Hewelsfield

Hewelsfield es una aldea en la parroquia civil de Hewelsfield y Brockweir , en el distrito de Forest of Dean de Gloucestershire , Inglaterra.

El pueblo está situado a 6 millas al sur de Coleford y a 5 millas al noreste de Chepstow , cerca del valle del Wye y parcialmente dentro de un Área de Excepcional Belleza Natural .

La zona era conocida en el período anglosajón como Hiwoldestone . Guillermo el Conquistador la incluyó en el Bosque Real de Dean , pero en el siglo XII ya se había establecido como un pueblo con iglesia. Antiguas rutas que subían desde el río Severn en Alvington y Woolaston convergían en el pueblo de Hewelsfield y continuaban hasta el cercano pueblo de St. Briavels . En 1266, la mansión de Hewelsfield fue otorgada a la Abadía de Tintern , que la conservó hasta la Disolución en 1536. La iglesia parroquial de Santa María Magdalena tiene una nave normanda ; un presbiterio de estilo inglés temprano (restaurado en el siglo XIX); y un transepto norte ampliado en el siglo XVI. ^{[ 3 ]} El cementerio tiene forma circular, lo que a menudo se interpreta como una posible ubicación pagana o de origen celta . ^{[ 4 ]}

The area known as Hewelsfield Common, west of the village and sloping down to the River Wye, was occupied and developed in a piecemeal fashion by squatters in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Later in the 19th century, encouraged partly by the opening of the Wye Valley Railway on the Monmouthshire side of the river in 1876, private residents and retired people settled in the area and enlarged the cottages or built new houses.^[1]

Hewelsfield, together with Brockweir, is served by the Brockweir and Hewelsfield Village Shop and Café, a non-profit making community enterprise, staffed by volunteers from the local community.
