Era hijo de Matthew Fetherstonhaugh de Featherstone Castle , Northumberland . En 1746, heredó las propiedades de un pariente, Sir Henry Fetherston, pero no el título de baronet de este último, que se extinguió con su muerte. Sin embargo, el 3 de enero de 1747, Fetherstonhaugh fue nombrado baronet de Featherstonehaugh en el condado de Northumberland, dentro del Baronetage de Gran Bretaña .

Tras su matrimonio con Sarah Lethieullier, hermana de Benjamin Lethieullier , en diciembre de 1746, [ 2 ] compró Uppark , Sussex, y las mansiones de East y West Harting, y en 1747 vendió la finca familiar de Featherstone a James Wallace. Entre 1748 y 1753 realizó el Grand Tour con su cuñado Benjamin Lethieullier y su hermanastro Lascelles Iremonger. De regreso a Uppark trajeron una impresionante colección de arte italiano. [ 3 ]

En febrero de 1752, Fetherstonhaugh fue elegido miembro de la Royal Society , como «un caballero de letras y progreso, y versado en conocimientos naturales». [ 4 ] Fue propuesto por Willoughby de Parham , James Burrow , Peter Davall , Israel Mauduit y James Theobald .

Fue miembro del Parlamento por Morpeth desde 1755 hasta 1761 y por Portsmouth desde 1762 hasta 1774. En la década de 1750, encargó al arquitecto James Paine el diseño y la construcción de Dover House , en Whitehall , Londres.

Le sucedió su hijo, Henry .

En 1774, encargó la construcción de la Torre Vándala .
