Minyip es una localidad en la región de Wimmera , en Victoria , Australia , a 320 kilómetros (199 millas) al noroeste de Melbourne . Pertenece al municipio de Yarriambiack . Según el censo de 2016 , Minyip tenía una población de 524 habitantes. [ 1 ] 

El nombre "Minyip" deriva de una palabra aborigen que significa "cenizas" o "lugar de acampada". [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

La ciudad es conocida como el "Corazón del Cinturón del Trigo". [ 4 ] La agricultura de secano, especialmente la producción y el manejo de granos, es una de las principales industrias de la región.

Historia

La zona fue colonizada por primera vez por colonos europeos alrededor de 1872. [ 5 ] El pueblo se convirtió en un nudo ferroviario cuando el ferrocarril llegó desde Murtoa en 1886. Un granero se utilizó para almacenar el trigo local hasta que se construyeron silos en 1939-40.

El juzgado de la ciudad data de 1886 y la antigua oficina del periódico local The Guardian (1885) ha sido convertida en un centro de investigación histórica por la sociedad histórica local. El Club Hotel (1907) y el Commercial Hotel (1908) son edificios eduardianos con rejas de hierro forjado y vidrieras emplomadas. La tienda Violet's General Store data de 1897. [ 6 ]

Había una sucursal del Commercial Bank of Australia en Minyip en 1891. [ 8 ] El Colonial Bank of Australasia tenía una sucursal en la ciudad en 1902.

El activista por los derechos de los aborígenes y médico Charles Duguid, nacido en Escocia, y su primera esposa, Irene, vivieron en Minyip durante aproximadamente dos años después de su matrimonio en 1912. Durante ese tiempo, ejerció como médico general . [ 9 ]

El Tribunal de Magistrados de Minyip cerró sus puertas el 1 de enero de 1983. [ 10 ]

Entre 1887 y 2018 se celebró una feria agrícola en Minyip, pero se suspendió debido a la imposibilidad de reunir un comité para organizarla. [ 11 ]

The German Lutherans, fleeing religious persecution, came to the area around Minyip in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. One group formed at the tiny village of Kirchheim, 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) south-west of Minyip. They built a weatherboard church there in 1875 but it was destroyed by a violent storm in 1889. This led to the construction, in that same year, of the present timber building. In 1935 this building, which had an estimated weight of 50 tons, was moved by steam traction engine to its present site on the corner of Church and Carrol Streets. It took three days to move the structure the 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from its original foundations. On the way it very nearly toppled over when it reached a rabbit warren and the weight caused the warren to collapse.

St John's is a Gothic design which retains its fine octagonal steeple with belfry, 19th-century pipe organ, stained-glass lancet windows and pews, although the men no longer sit on the opposite side of the aisle to the women.

Today

Minyip was the filming location for exterior scenes in the 2020 film The Dry, representing the fictional town of Kiewarra, Victoria, as well as the television seriesThe Flying Doctors, representing the fictional outback town of Coopers Crossing. The Flying Doctors' headquarters, Cooper's Crossing Garage, and Majestic Hotel are all located on the main street of the town and still visit-able. However, they now have alternative uses as the Minyip Senior Citizen's Centre and Guy's Coffee & Cafe[12] respectively and a Men's Shed.[13] As of 2021, the Club Hotel no longer operates as a hotel.[14][15] In the Club Hotel, there is a room filled with Flying Doctors' memorabilia including signed scripts and props from the shows.

Main Street currently boasts an IGA supermarket, post office/pharmacy, cafe & takeaway, butcher, a second hand/op shop, a caravan park, art and craft groups. The Commercial Hotel and the Club Hotel are currently closed.

The children of Minyip attend a local kindergarten and primary school. There is a branch of WWHS on Church Street with a nurse on full-time. Minyip is also the home of the Dunmunkle Lodge Retirement Village.[16]

The Minyip Lions Club is very active, as is the Historical Society. There are numerous plaques displaying the history of the town, with the biggest concentration being in the town square and outside the Senior Citizen's Centre.

Los equipos Minyip FNC y Murtoa FNC se fusionaron en 1995 y ahora compiten en la Liga de Fútbol y Netball de Wimmera como Minyip / Murtoa Kookaburras FNC.

La ciudad cuenta con un club de fútbol australiano y netball compuesto por cuatro equipos de fútbol (Seniors, Reservas, Sub-17 y Sub-14) y siete equipos de netball (Categorías A, B, C, Reserva C, Sub-17, Sub-15 y Sub-13).
