Recceswinth ^{[ 1 ]} (fallecido el 1 de septiembre de 672) fue rey visigodo de Hispania y Septimania entre 649 y 672. Gobernó conjuntamente con su padre Chindaswinth hasta la muerte de este en 653.

Se cree que su nombre gótico era *𐍂𐌰𐌹𐌺𐌰𐍃𐍅𐌹𐌽𐌸𐍃 (* Raikaswinþs ), de las raíces reiks ("rey") y swinþs ("fuerte"). Su corona votiva usaba la grafía latina RECCESVINTHVS . Otras grafías latinas incluyen Recceswinthus , Recesvindus . En inglés su nombre también se escribe Reccesuinth , Recceswint , Reccaswinth ; en español Recesvinto ; en portugués Recesvindo ; en alemán Rekkeswint ; en francés Réceswinthe . ^{[ 2 ]}

Bajo el reinado de Recceswinth, el Reino Visigodo disfrutó de una paz ininterrumpida durante 19 años (653-672), a excepción de una breve rebelión de los vascones , liderada por un noble llamado Froya , un godo exiliado que, huyendo de las persecuciones del monarca, se había asentado, como muchos otros, en territorio vasco. Froya y los vascones asolaron las tierras del valle del Ebro, saquearon iglesias, asesinaron clérigos y sitiaron la ciudad de Zaragoza . Recceswinth reaccionó, levantó el asedio y mató a Froya. ^{[ 3 ]}

A partir del año 654, Recceswinth fue responsable de la promulgación de un código legal, el Liber Iudiciorum , para reemplazar el Breviario de Alarico ; impuso un derecho común visigodo tanto a godos como a hispanorromanos en el reino. Este Liber Iudiciorum mostró poca influencia germánica , adhiriéndose más estrechamente a las antiguas leyes romanas . En su código legal general de 654, prohibió una serie de prácticas judías esenciales, incluyendo la circuncisión masculina , las leyes dietéticas ( kashrut ), las leyes y ceremonias matrimoniales y la celebración de la Pascua . ^{[ 4 ]}

Moreover, the church councils in the Visigothic capital Toledo (Toletum) became the most powerful force in the government and the bishops were the primary support of the monarchy. Will Durant wrote in The Age of Faith: "By their superior education and organization they dominated the nobles who sat with them in the ruling councils of Toledo; and though the king's authority was theoretically absolute, and he chose the bishops, these councils elected him, and exacted pledges of policy in advance."

Recceswinth died on 1 September 672, just before the first Arab raid on Hispania Baetica.^[5]

The votive crown of Recceswinth is an example of Visigothic art made in Hispania. It was found in the Treasure of Guarrazar, a goldsmith's treasure made up of crowns and crosses that several kings of Toledo offered in their time as a gesture of the orthodoxy of their faith and their submission to the ecclesiastical hierarchy; the treasure was found between 1858 and 1861 at the archaeological site called Huerta de Guarrazar, located in the city of Guadamur, near Toledo.

The votive crown of Recceswinth is in Madrid's National Archaeological Museum of Spain. Among the crowns, made of gold and precious stones, it is the one that attracts the most attention because of the exquisite workmanship of its goldsmithery, with gemstones suspended beneath the filigree Latin letters hanging from its base, which read: RECCESVINTHVS REX OFFERET ("King Receswinth offered it").^[6]
