Silver Stream Railway is a heritage railway at Silverstream in the Hutt Valley near Wellington, New Zealand. It regularly operates preserved New Zealand Railways Departmentlocomotives along a restored section of the Hutt Valley Line (part of the Wairarapa Line) before a deviation was built in 1954.

History

The beginnings of Silver Stream Railway were in 1967 when the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society began a collection of locomotives and rolling stock. Tracklaying on the old formation of the Hutt Valley Line did not begin until 1977. The collection of locomotives and rolling stock had previously been stored at a site by the Gracefield Branch in Seaview, and this was transferred to the present Silverstream site in 1984. The official opening of the full 1.5-kilometre (0.93 mi) track took place on 15 February 1986.[1]

Material rodante

El ferrocarril posee una variedad de material rodante, algunos en condiciones operativas y otros en espera de restauración. Cuenta con una amplia selección de material rodante, algunos de ellos bastante raros. Uno de los ejemplares más destacados es el vagón de pasajeros de 50 pies del Ferrocarril Wellington y Manawatu (WMR), n.° 48, posteriormente NZR A 1126, que está siendo restaurado por el NZR&LS en el depósito de North End. Si bien se sabe que existen cuatro vagones de pasajeros del WMR, este es el único en restauración. El vagón n.° 50 del WMR (NZR A 1130) también se encuentra almacenado en el ferrocarril, sin restaurar.

Operación

Los trenes circulan de 11:00 a 16:00 horas el primer y tercer domingo de cada mes durante la mayor parte del año, excepto en junio, julio, agosto y diciembre, meses en los que el ferrocarril solo abre el primer domingo. Además, el ferrocarril abre algunos lunes festivos y está disponible para alquileres privados durante todo el año. Se celebran varios eventos especiales a lo largo del año, en los que circulan varios trenes y los visitantes tienen la oportunidad de ver el taller ferroviario y otras locomotoras y material rodante en exposición.
