Suilven

Suilven (Scottish Gaelic: Sùlabheinn^[1]) is a Graham mountain in Scotland. Lying in a remote area in the west of Sutherland, it rises from a wilderness landscape of moorland, bogs and lochans of the region known as Assynt. Suilven forms a steep-sided ridge some two kilometres (1+1⁄4 mi) in length. The highest point, Caisteal Liath ("Grey Castle" in Scottish Gaelic), lies at the northwest end of this ridge. There are two other summits: Meall Meadhonach ("Middle Round Hill") at the central point of the ridge is 723 metres (2,372 ft) high, whilst Meall Beag ("Little Round Hill") lies at the southeastern end.

The name is Viking in origin, coming from the Old Norse súla fjell, meaning "pillar mountain" (with the later substitution of Gaelic bheinn for fjell).^[2]

Geologically, Suilven is formed of Torridonian sandstone, sitting on a landscape of Lewisian gneiss. The surrounding rocks were eroded during an episode of glaciation. Suilven was covered by the last British and Irish Ice Sheet. Prior research described Suilven and many other mountains in Northwest Scotland as nunataks, but cosmogenic isotope dating of mountaintop erratics has since disproved this hypothesis. The flow of ice created the distinctive narrow teardrop plan, while carving and scouring the vertical sides of the mountain.^[3]

In 2005 Glencanisp estate, of which Suilven forms part, and the neighbouring Drumrunie estate, were bought by the local community, with the help of the National Lottery and HIE, through a charity they formed called Assynt Foundation. The Assynt Foundation aims to create local employment and safeguard the natural and cultural heritage for the benefit of the community and future generations, and for the enjoyment of the wider public.

La ruta de ascenso más común comienza al final de un camino privado que lleva a Glencanisp Lodge, a aproximadamente 1,5 kilómetros (1 milla) de Lochinver , al oeste de la cima. La Fundación Assynt ofrece aparcamiento público justo antes de Glencanisp Lodge. Desde allí, un sendero atraviesa un páramo ondulado hacia la escarpada ladera norte de Suilven y la ruta que sube a Bealach Mòr (el Gran Bealach o Paso) después de unos 11 kilómetros (7 millas). La subida final al collado es empinada, y el sendero ha sido reconstruido con numerosos escalones de piedra. La cima en sí es amplia y cubierta de hierba, aunque está casi totalmente rodeada de acantilados verticales. 

Otra ruta parte de Inverkirkaig, a unos cuatro kilómetros ( 2 millas y media ) al sur de Lochinver: esta ruta llega al collado desde el sur, pasando por las cataratas de Kirkaig. También se puede empezar desde Elphin, en la vertiente oriental. Es posible alcanzar la cresta sin necesidad de ascender primero al collado Mòr desde esta dirección, aunque se requiere una escalada muy expuesta , especialmente entre Meall Meadhonach y Meall Beag. 

Todas estas rutas implican un recorrido de ida y vuelta de unos 25 kilómetros ( 15 + 1/2 millas ) por terreno accidentado.

La montaña se menciona en muchos de los poemas sobre la naturaleza de Norman MacCaig, que tratan sobre su estancia en Assynt y las Tierras Altas escocesas.
