Surinder Singh Matharu

El profesor Surinder Singh Matharu ( punjabi : ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਠਾਰੂ) (nacido en 1969 en Kapurthala, India) es un erudito británico en música india, ^{[ 1 ]} filosofía, ^{[ 2 ]} y naad yoga.

En 1994, en Londres, el profesor Surinder Singh fundó la Raj Academy of Asian Music, que más tarde se convirtió en la organización sin ánimo de lucro conocida como Raj Academy Conservatoire. La Academia es una institución internacional y rápidamente se convirtió en una de las escuelas más importantes para el estudio y la práctica de la música sij y el Gurmat Sangeet («música de la sabiduría del gurú») de la tradición musical sij, enseñando el arte de tocar instrumentos musicales antiguos de la India, como el Rabab , el Taus , el Saranghi , el Dilruba , el Saranda y el Jori . ^{[ 3 ]} También es miembro fundador del Naad Yoga Council, fundado en 2008. ^{[ 4 ]}

En 2006, Surinder Singh fue nombrado catedrático de Musicología en la Universidad de Thames Valley (actualmente Universidad del Oeste de Londres). Impartió cursos de grado en dicha universidad sobre música sij, yoga Naad y música clásica india hasta 2012. En 2017, estrenó el primer documental multipremiado sobre música sij titulado «Patrimonio musical sij: La historia jamás contada». ^{[ 13 ] [ 14 ]}

Prof. Surinder Singh was born and brought up in India and like many Sikhs hails from an Indian military family.^[15] In his younger years he would spend time with Yogis, Sadhus and Spiritual people.^[16] His early childhood was strongly influenced by Indian classical music, which he practised from the age of nine. His earliest teachers were Mahant Ajit Singh for musicology and Gyani Najar Singh for rhythm. During his teenage years Surinder Singh had the great privilege of studying singing, composition and musicology under the Guru- Shishya Parampara (intensive personal training under a master) with Pandit Kharayti Lal Tahim from the Delhi Gharana. His musical training was continued in England under Surjit Singh Aulakh, a senior student of Pandit Ram Narayan Ji.^[17]

In 1988, aged 19, Surinder Singh gained a BA in Economics at NJSA College, Kapurthala. A year later he graduated with an MA in Classical Indian Music at APJ College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, followed by an MPhil in Classical Indian Music at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Matharu received the title of professor whilst working for the Thames Valley University developing the first ever, globally recognised, degree in Sikh Music.^[18]
