Hospital Bootham Park

En 1772, Robert Hay Drummond , arzobispo de York , decidió junto con «veinticuatro caballeros de Yorkshire» establecer un asilo, que se conocería como el «Asilo para Dementes del Condado de York». Se formó un comité y se incorporó al arquitecto John Carr con una promesa de donación de 25 guineas. El mecenas de Carr, el marqués de Rockingham , prometió 100 guineas, y se suscribieron un total de 2500 libras esterlinas. En julio de 1773, se habían prometido 5000 libras esterlinas, y el proyecto de Carr para albergar a 54 pacientes fue aprobado el 25 de agosto. El edificio se terminó en 1777. ^{[ 2 ]}

Tras las críticas sobre el trato a los internos del asilo y la muerte de Hannah Mills , que era cuáquera , la comunidad cuáquera local fundó un nuevo asilo conocido como The Retreat en 1790. ^{[ 3 ]} El asilo se convirtió en el Hospital Bootham Park en 1904 ^{[ 4 ]} y se unió al Servicio Nacional de Salud en 1948. ^{[ 4 ]}

A finales de septiembre de 2015, la Comisión de Calidad de la Atención declaró el edificio del hospital inhabitable y ordenó su cierre para finales de mes. ^{[ 5 ] [ 6 ]} Se dio al personal un preaviso de 5 días para el cierre del edificio. ^{[ 7 ]} El hospital cerró el 1 de octubre de 2015, tras haber sido declarado inhabitable. Ese mismo día , el Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust sustituyó al Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust como proveedor de la mayoría de los servicios de salud mental en York. Un informe independiente encargado por el Ayuntamiento de York a John Ransford concluyó: ^{[ 8 ]}

• The Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group failed to ensure that the transfer was properly managed;
• Leeds & York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust had not properly taken responsibility for the building, although they spent £2.7 million on refurbishing the old building;
• If Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust failed to investigate the problems they would be sanctioned;
• NHS Property Services significantly underestimated the logistic and practical challenges of upgrading a Grade I listed building where shortcomings had been identified over many years;
• The Care Quality Commission gave insufficient attention to the particular issues raised by formal de-registration and registration of facilities, triggered by the transfer of services between agencies.

A smaller 24-bedded unit opened in 2016 replacing the 36 beds from Bootham Park Hospital. Outpatient clinics also reopened in February 2016.^[9] In April 2020 the hospital was being considered as a location where additional beds could be provided during the COVID-19 pandemic.^[10] Later the same month, the new 72-bed Foss Park Hospital opened in a different part of the city as a permanent replacement to Bootham Park Hospital.^[11]
