El sheriff es el cargo secular más antiguo de la Corona . El cargo era una posición poderosa en épocas anteriores, especialmente en el caso de Yorkshire , que cubre un área muy grande. Los sheriffs eran responsables del mantenimiento de la ley y el orden y de varias otras funciones. Algunos de sus poderes en Yorkshire fueron abandonados en 1547 cuando el Lord Lieutenant de Yorkshire fue nombrado para ocuparse de los deberes militares. Fue recién en 1908, bajo el reinado de Eduardo VII del Reino Unido , que el Lord Lieutenant pasó a tener mayor jerarquía que el Sheriff.
