Spas Wenkoff (Спас Венков) (23 de septiembre de 1928 – 12 de agosto de 2013) fue un tenor operístico búlgaro-austríaco . Fue conocido internacionalmente por su dominio de los papeles de heldentenor de Wagner, como Tristán y Tannhäuser . Debutó en su papel más emblemático, Tristán, en 1975 en la Ópera Estatal de Dresde , seguido del Festival del Centenario de Bayreuth en 1976 y la Metropolitan Opera en 1981, entre muchos otros. Fue miembro de la Ópera Estatal de Berlín de 1976 a 1984, y posteriormente trabajó como solista en importantes teatros de ópera. Recibió el título de Kammersänger tanto en Berlín como en Viena.

Carrera

Nacido en Veliko Tarnovo , Wenkoff inicialmente estudió derecho y trabajó durante varios años como abogado . También estudió canto, primero en Tarnovo y Ruse , y luego en Dresde con Johannes Kemter. [ 1 ] Trabajó como asesor legal y también fue segundo concertino en un teatro de opereta amateur en su ciudad natal. [ 2 ] En 1954, hizo su debut en el escenario en la opereta Keto y Kote de Viktor Dolidze. Hasta 1963, fue tenor de opereta a tiempo completo en el teatro, actuando alrededor de 1000 veces. [ 2 ] Luego se mudó a Ruse, el segundo teatro de ópera más grande de Bulgaria. [ 2 ] Además de la opereta, apareció como Don Ottavio en Don Giovanni de Mozart , Almaviva en El barbero de Sevilla de Rossini , Alfredo en La traviata de Verdi y como Fausto de Gounod . En 1965 se trasladó a Alemania Oriental y trabajó inicialmente como miembro del Stadttheater Döbeln en Sajonia , [ 3 ] donde interpretó el papel principal de Der Freischütz de Weber, el de Riccardo en Un ballo in maschera de Verdi y el de Otello , entre otros. [ 4 ] En 1968 se trasladó al Theater Magdeburg y actuó de 1971 a 1976 en la Ópera de Halle . [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

On 12 October 1975, after a successful audition with stage director Harry Kupfer in Dresden, he sang the title role in Tristan und Isolde for the first time, which became his signature role. The performance was conducted by Marek Janowski, and he sang alongside Ingeborg Zobel as Isolde and Theo Adam as Marke.[2] He appeared as Tristan a total of 226 times during his career. He appeared as Tristan at the Bayreuth Festival in the centenary year 1976, alongside Catarina Ligendza as Isolde, staged by August Everding and conducted by Carlos Kleiber.[2] After that success, he was a member of the ensemble of the Berlin State Opera from 1976 to 1984.[1] The Tristan production in Bayreuth was repeated in 1977, 1982 and 1983. He also performed there the title role in Götz Friedrich's new staging of Tannhäuser in 1978,[1] alongside Gwyneth Jones as both Venus and Elisabeth, conducted by Colin Davis, and filmed live. A reviewer noted his assured singing and acting, giving the character both authority and anguish.[5]

In 1981, Wenkoff made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, again as Tristan.[1]The New York Times' review compared him to Ludwig Suthaus and Ramón Vinay, and noted his "solid lower register", "care for declamation and a sensitivity to the drama", with a focus on the character's introspection, with the "finest impact during the legato of the Act II love duet".[6] In March 1982, Wenkoff appeared at the (West German) Frankfurt Opera as Otello. In the following years, he sang mainly at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Cologne Opera.[1]
