El St Andrews Golf Club , originalmente conocido como St Andrews Mechanics Golf Club , es un club de golf privado para socios ubicado en St Andrews , Escocia. El club es uno de los clubes de golf más antiguos del mundo, ya que fue fundado en 1843. [ 2 ]

El St Andrews Golf Club fue fundado por 11 comerciantes locales el 29 de septiembre de 1843 como el St Andrews Mechanics Golf Club. [ 5 ] Los miembros fundadores fueron: William Ayton ( ebanista ), John Keddie ( carpintero ), George Morris ( mayordomo ), hermano mayor de Old Tom Morris , Alexander Bruce (ebanista), John Lynn ( sastre ), Robert Patterson ( pizarr ), Alexander Carstairs (ebanista), Adam McPherson ( yeso ), David Todd Junior ( pintor ), James Herd ( albañil ) y James McPherson ( maestro de baile ). En 1851, el entonces capitán del club, James Howie, propuso que el club cambiara su nombre a St Andrews Golf Club o un nombre similar. El 22 de septiembre de 1853, el Fifeshire Journal informó que el Mechanics Golf Club había cambiado su nombre a St Andrews Golf Club. [ 6 ] En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, el St Andrews Golf Club era el club de golf más fuerte de Escocia, con miembros como Allan Robertson , generalmente considerado el mejor golfista de Escocia desde 1843 hasta su muerte. Allan Robertson and Old Tom Morris of the St Andrews Golf Club were an intimidating challenging team, occasionally called "the invincibles".[12] Large sums of money for the matches was put up by sponsors, with the players who won also getting a percentage, but they also made their own bets too.[12] Team matches are a tradition within the St Andrews Golf Club.[12] The first match that was arranged was against Leven in 1849 with teams of 6 players on each side.[12]

The clubhouse

Historically golfing societies and clubs would normally meet in either a local hotel or member's house close to the golf course.[1] Official clubhouses became popular in Scotland from the mid-nineteenth century as the game's popularity increased.[1] The St Andrews Golf Club first purchased a clubhouse in 1905 in nearby Golf Place.[1] In 1932, the club purchased Links House for £2,700.[1] It cost a further £2,000 to convert it to a clubhouse.[1] The new clubhouse was officially opened on 20 July 1933.[1] It was built at the end of the 19th century, and overlooks the 18th green on the Old Course at St Andrews and across from the Royal and Ancient clubhouse.[1] It was listed as a Grade C building on 12 December 2001.[1] The club has used Links House as their clubhouse since 1933.[1]

Membership

Membership of the club has grown over the years from 11 at its foundation in 1843, to 535 in 1927, 1,013 in 1947 and to over 2,000 members in 1998.[13]

Honorary members

Bobby Jones became an honorary member in 1958.[6] He was a winner of 13 major golf championships and the only man to have won the Grand Slam, winning the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, the British Open, and the British Amateur Championship all in the same year of 1930.

Jack Nicklaus se convirtió en miembro honorario durante el Open Championship de 1978 , cuando aún estaba a mitad del evento en St Andrews.
