Ovalentaria es un clado de peces con aletas radiadas dentro de Percomorpha , denominado subserie. [ 2 ] Está compuesto por un grupo de familias de peces que en la quinta edición de Fishes of the World se denominan incertae sedis , así como por los órdenes Mugiliformes , Cichliformes y Blenniiformes . Fue nombrado por WL Smith y TJ Near en Wainwright et al. (2012) basándose en una filogenia molecular, pero los autores sugirieron que el grupo estaba unido por la presencia de huevos demersales adheridos a un sustrato. Algunos autores han utilizado el nombre ordinal Stiassnyiformes para un clado que incluye Mugiloidei , Plesiopidae , Blenniiformes, Atherinomorpha y Cichlidae , y esta agrupación parece ser monofilética . The sister clades to the Ovalentaria is the group of taxa called the Carangimorpharia or Carangaria, which includes the flatfishes, billfishes, and jacks among others.[3][6]
