Historia en Europa y América

Antes de 1960

En 1922, las faldas se acortaron y ahora podían llegar hasta la mitad de la espinilla en lugar de solo el tobillo. El gerente de una tienda anónima en Oxford Street, Londres, comenzó a experimentar en 1960 con dobladillos de faldas una pulgada por encima de las rodillas en maniquíes de escaparate y notó la respuesta positiva de sus clientes. [22] En agosto de 1961, Life publicó una fotografía de dos estudiantes de Seattle en la Universidad de Hawái que llevaban prendas por encima de la rodilla llamadas "kookie-muus", una versión abreviada del tradicionalmente oculto muumuu , y señaló una "moda actual entre los adolescentes por las faldas cortas" que estaba llevando los dobladillos muy por encima de la rodilla. En el verano de 1962, en Gran Bretaña se observaron faldas extremadamente cortas, algunas de hasta veinte centímetros por encima de la rodilla. [24] Las mujeres jóvenes que usaban estas faldas cortas eran llamadas "chicas Ya-Ya", un término derivado de "yeah, yeah", que era un piropo popular en ese momento. [24] La primera referencia conocida a la minifalda se encuentra en un artículo humorístico de 1962 fechado en la Ciudad de México y que describe la "minifalda" o "Ya-Ya" como una prenda de vestir controvertida que era lo último en la línea de producción allí. El artículo caracterizaba la minifalda como que terminaba veinte centímetros por encima de la rodilla. Se refería a un escrito de un psiquiatra, cuyo nombre no se proporcionó, que había argumentado que la minifalda era una protesta juvenil contra las amenazas internacionales a la paz. Gran parte del artículo describía las reacciones de los hombres, que se decía que favorecían la moda en mujeres jóvenes con las que no tenían parentesco, pero se oponían a ella en sus propias esposas y prometidas. Solo unas pocas de las vanguardias, casi todas en el Reino Unido, usaron tales largos en los primeros años de la década. [28] Subiría gradualmente en los siguientes años, dejando al descubierto por completo las rodillas de las modelos convencionales en 1964, cuando André Courrèges [29] y Mary Quant [30] [31] mostraron largos por encima de la rodilla, seguidos poco después por Rudi Gernreich [32] y Jacques Tiffeau en los EE. La forma de las minifaldas en los años 60 era distintiva. No eran las faldas ajustadas diseñadas para mostrar cada curva como lo habían sido las faldas tubo de los años 50 , ni eran versiones acortadas de las faldas circulares de los años 50 con cinturón apretado y enaguas reforzadas. En los años 90 y después, las exposiciones sobre los años 60 presentaban ocasionalmente minifaldas vintage ajustadas contra maniquíes de galería, pero las minifaldas de los años 60 no se usaban ajustadas de esa manera. En el Reino Unido, las faldas acortadas a menos de 24 pulgadas (610 mm) se clasificaban como prendas para niños en lugar de ropa para adultos. La ropa para niños no estaba sujeta al impuesto sobre la compra, mientras que la ropa para adultos sí lo estaba. [74] La evasión del impuesto significaba que el precio era correspondientemente menor. Cuando los diseñadores intentaron obligar a las mujeres a cambiar a faldas midi en 1969 y 1970, las mujeres, especialmente en los EE. UU., [109] respondieron ignorándolos, [110] continuaron usando minis y microminis [111] y recurrieron a pantalones [112] como los promovidos por Yves Saint Laurent en 1968, [113] una tendencia que dominaría la década de 1970.

Afirmaciones del diseñador

André Courrèges

Courrèges afirmó explícitamente que él inventó la minifalda, y acusó a Quant de solo "comercializarla". La idea de que John Bates, en lugar de Quant o Courrèges, innovara la minifalda tuvo una defensora influyente en Marit Allen , quien como editora de las influyentes páginas "Young Ideas" de la Vogue del Reino Unido , seguía la pista de los jóvenes diseñadores emergentes. [117] En 1966 eligió a Bates para diseñar su traje de boda de longitud mini en gabardina blanca y PVC plateado . Debido a la posición de Quant en el corazón del moderno " Swinging London ", la minifalda pudo extenderse más allá de una simple moda callejera a una importante tendencia internacional, no solo con un valor estético significativo sino también un valor político considerable. [135] El estilo ganó prominencia cuando Jean Shrimpton usó un vestido blanco corto , hecho por Colin Rolfe, el 30 de octubre de 1965 en el Derby Day, primer día del carnaval anual de la Copa de Melbourne en Australia, donde causó sensación. Un artículo de la BBC de 2014 escribió que las minifaldas seguían siendo una prenda tan contemporánea como siempre, conservando su asociación con la juventud.
