
Los dinosaurios evolucionaron a mediados del período Triásico de la era Mesozoica , hace unos 230 millones de años. Al comienzo del período Jurásico , unos 30 millones de años después, el supercontinente comenzó a dividirse en Laurasia y Gondwana . La mayor entrada de agua proveniente de Panthalassa , el superocéano que rodeaba Pangea, se llamaba Océano Tetis , y a medida que esta entrada se adentraba más en el supercontinente, gran parte de Europa quedó inundada.
Durante el Cretácico , hace entre 145 y 66 millones de años, los continentes comenzaban a adquirir sus formas actuales, aunque no sus posiciones actuales, y Europa seguía siendo tropical. En ocasiones, era una cadena de microcontinentes insulares, entre los que se incluían Báltica e Iberia .

- Agrosaurus macgillivrayi : Originalmente se pensó erróneamente que era de Australia. Ahora se cree que es más probable que sea de Inglaterra y posiblemente un sinónimo de Thecodontosaurus .
- Archaeopteryx : Un taxón bien conocido que combina plumas pennáceas similares a las de las aves con los dientes, garras y cola larga de los reptiles. Generalmente se le considera un avialano basal, pero también podría ser un deinonicosaurio no aviar estrechamente relacionado con los dromeosáuridos.
- Balaur bondoc : Un extraño paraviano que poseía un conjunto de características únicas, como músculos robustos, dos garras en forma de hoz, una mano didáctila y un intestino profundo. - Darwinsaurus evolutionis : Puede ser sinónimo de Hypselospinus o Mantellisaurus .
- Delapparentia turolensis : Se dice que es un sinónimo menor de Iguanodon , pero un estudio de 2026 consideró que es distinto de ese género, estando más estrechamente relacionado con Magnamanus .
- Dinheirosaurus lourinhanensis : Posiblemente una segunda especie de Supersaurus .

- Ornithomerus gracilis: May be synonymous with Mochlodon.
- Pachysauriscus ajax: Usually seen as a synonym of Plateosaurus, but a 2023 review considered it distinct.
- Pantydraco caducus: Originally named as a species of Thecodontosaurus and indeed it may belong to that genus.
- Polacanthoides ponderosus: Potentially a synonym of Hylaeosaurus, Polacanthus or both (a chimera).
- Proplanicoxa galtoni: May be a junior synonym of Mantellisaurus.
- Rhadinosaurus alcimus: Suggested to be synonymous with Struthiosaurus, but it might have been a crocodilian instead.
- Sellacoxa pauli: Possibly synonymous with Barilium.
- Stegosaurus: Some bones from Portugal have been assigned to this genus, but not to a particular species.
- Suchosaurus: Two species have been named, both from teeth. They are indistinguishable from those of baryonychines and may in fact belong to Baryonyx.
- Taveirosaurus costai: Only known from teeth. Initially thought to be an ornithischian but it might be a eutriconodont mammal instead.
- Therosaurus: This genus was named to accommodate the original type species of Iguanodon, I. anglicus. However, it was named before the type species was transferred to I. bernissartensis, so it remains a junior synonym of Iguanodon.
- Valdoraptor oweni: Potentially a junior synonym of Thecocoelurus.
- Wellnhoferia grandis: May be another specimen of Archaeopteryx.
- Yaverlandia bitholus: Originally believed to be a pachycephalosaur on account of its domed forehead, but later reexamination found it to be a maniraptoran. A second specimen described in 2026 showed that it also has similarities with crocodyliforms.
