Los dinosaurios son un grupo diverso de reptiles que aparecieron por primera vez durante el período Triásico , hace entre 243 y 233,23 millones de años . Se convirtieron en los vertebrados terrestres dominantes tras la extinción masiva del Triásico-Jurásico, hace 201,3 millones de años, y su dominio se mantuvo durante los períodos Jurásico y Cretácico . El registro fósil demuestra que las aves son dinosaurios modernos con plumas, que evolucionaron a partir de terópodos anteriores durante el Jurásico Tardío . Por lo tanto, las aves fueron el único linaje de dinosaurios que sobrevivió a la extinción masiva del Cretácico-Paleógeno, hace aproximadamente 66 millones de años, y constituyen los únicos dinosaurios vivos conocidos.   

Esta lista de dinosaurios es un listado exhaustivo de todos los géneros que alguna vez se han considerado dinosaurios no aviares , pero también incluye algunos dinosaurios cuyo estatus como no aviares es controvertido, así como términos puramente vernáculos.

La lista incluye todos los géneros comúnmente aceptados, pero también géneros que ahora se consideran inválidos, dudosos ( nomen dubium ) o que no se publicaron formalmente ( nomen nudum ), así como sinónimos menores y géneros que ya no se consideran dinosaurios. Muchos de los nombres listados se han reclasificado como todo tipo de cosas, desde aves verdaderas hasta cocodrilos o madera petrificada . La lista contiene 1863 nombres, de los cuales aproximadamente 1424 se consideran géneros de dinosaurios válidos o nomina dubia .

Alcance y terminología

No existe una lista oficial y canónica de todos los géneros de dinosaurios no aviares. La más cercana es la Dinosaur Genera List , compilada por el experto en nomenclatura biológica George Olshevsky, que se publicó por primera vez en línea en 1995 y se actualizó periódicamente hasta junio de 2021. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] La fuente general más autorizada en el campo es la segunda edición (2004) de The Dinosauria . La gran mayoría de los nombres que se enumeran a continuación provienen de la lista de Olshevsky, y todas las determinaciones subjetivas (como la sinonimia menor o el estatus de no dinosaurio) se basan en The Dinosauria , excepto cuando entran en conflicto con la literatura primaria. Estas excepciones se indican.

Las convenciones de nomenclatura y la terminología siguen el Código Internacional de Nomenclatura Zoológica (ICZN). Los términos técnicos utilizados incluyen: [ 1 ]

  • Sinónimo menor : Nombre que describe el mismo taxón que un nombre publicado previamente. Si se designan formalmente dos o más géneros y los especímenes tipo se asignan posteriormente al mismo género, el primero en publicarse (en orden cronológico) es el sinónimo principal, y todos los demás son sinónimos menores. Generalmente se utilizan los sinónimos principales, salvo decisión especial del ICZN (véase Tyrannosaurus ), pero los sinónimos menores no pueden volver a utilizarse para un género diferente, incluso si están desaconsejados. La sinonimia menor suele ser subjetiva, a menos que ambos géneros descritos se basen en el mismo espécimen tipo.
  • Nomen nudum (en latín, «nombre desnudo»): Nombre que ha aparecido impreso pero que aún no ha sido publicado formalmente según los estándares del ICZN.Los nomina nuda(en plural) no son válidos y, por lo tanto, no se escriben en cursiva como un nombre genérico. Si el nombre se publica formalmente más adelante, deja de ser unnomen nudumy se escribirá en cursiva en esta lista. A menudo, el nombre publicado formalmente difiere de cualquiernomina nudaque describa el mismo espécimen.
  • Nomen oblitum (en latín, "nombre olvidado"): Un nombre que no se ha utilizado en la comunidad científica durante más de cincuenta años después de su propuesta original.
  • Nomen manuscriptum (en latín, "nombre de manuscrito"): Un nombre que aparece en el manuscrito de una publicación formal que no tiene respaldo científico.
  • Nombre preocupado : Un nombre publicado formalmente, pero que ya ha sido utilizado para otro taxón. Este segundo uso no es válido (al igual que todos los usos posteriores) y el nombre debe ser reemplazado. Los nombres preocupados no son nombres genéricos válidos.
  • Nomen dubium (en latín, «nombre dudoso»): Nombre que describe un fósil sin características diagnósticas únicas. Dado que esta designación puede ser extremadamente subjetiva y controvertida (véase Hadrosaurus ), ningún género debe marcarse como tal en esta lista.
