Hay representantes de los Estados Unidos que solo cumplieron un mandato de dos años (o menos), generalmente debido a muerte, renuncia o derrota electoral. En algunos casos excepcionales, los miembros novatos han decidido postularse para otro cargo o no presentarse a la reelección, y dos miembros ( John William Reid y George Santos ) han sido expulsados . Muchos miembros que sirven en la Cámara por un solo mandato son vistos por historiadores y expertos políticos como ganadores en circunstancias que escapaban en gran medida a su control, como aprovechar el éxito de un candidato presidencial o estatal popular de su partido, o postularse contra un titular envuelto en escándalos.   1. Despite losing in 1922, Appleby did win re-election to the 69th Congress in 1924, but died before retaking his seat.

  6. Begich and House Majority Leader Hale Boggs along with two others disappeared on October 16, 1972, while flying from Anchorage to Juneau. Begich was re-electedin absentia, but was declared dead on December 29, 1972. His body was never found.
