Esta lista de castillos de Inglaterra no es una lista de todos los edificios y lugares que tienen la palabra "castillo" como parte de su nombre, ni tampoco enumera solo los edificios que se ajustan a una definición estricta de un castillo como residencia fortificada medieval . [1] No es una lista de todos los castillos que se han construido en Inglaterra, muchos de los cuales han desaparecido sin dejar rastro, sino que es principalmente una lista de edificios y restos que han sobrevivido. En casi todos los casos, los edificios que sobreviven están en ruinas o han sido alterados a lo largo de los siglos. Por varias razones, el hecho de que un sitio determinado sea el de un castillo medieval no se ha considerado un criterio suficiente para determinar si ese sitio debe incluirse o no en la lista.

Los castillos que han desaparecido o cuyos restos son apenas visibles no se incluyen en la lista, a excepción de algunos edificios y lugares importantes o bien conocidos. Para elaborar una lista lo más completa y coherente posible, es necesario establecer sus límites. Antes de elaborar la lista en sí, se incluye una discusión sobre su alcance que incluye largas listas de edificios excluidos de las listas principales por diversas razones. El Castellarium Anglicanum , un índice autorizado de castillos en Inglaterra y Gales publicado en 1983, enumera más de 1.500 sitios con castillos en Inglaterra. [2] Muchos de estos castillos han desaparecido o casi no han dejado rastro. La lista actual incluye más de 800 castillos medievales de los cuales hay restos visibles, y más de 300 tienen importantes restos de piedra o ladrillo supervivientes.

Historia

La Torre de Londres

Un castillo es un tipo de estructura fortificada que se desarrolló en Europa durante la Edad Media . Los primeros castillos aparecieron en Francia en el siglo X, [3] y en Inglaterra durante el siglo XI. Se sabe que se construyeron algunos castillos en Inglaterra antes de que los normandos invadieran el país en 1066; [4] muchos de ellos se construyeron en los años siguientes, el principal mecanismo por medio del cual los normandos pudieron consolidar su control sobre el país. [5] Si bien algunos castillos importantes, como la Torre Blanca en la Torre de Londres , se construyeron en piedra, la mayoría de los primeros castillos eran castillos de motte-and-bailey de terraplén y madera, que se podían construir rápidamente. Algunos se reconstruyeron más tarde en piedra, [6] pero hay una gran cantidad de sitios de castillos en Inglaterra donde todo lo que es visible hoy en día son rastros de terraplenes. [7]

Los castillos continuaron construyéndose en Inglaterra durante varios cientos de años, alcanzando un pico de sofisticación militar a fines del siglo XIII. [8] Los dos elementos principales en su construcción eran la gran torre o torre del homenaje , como la Torre Blanca, y el recinto fortificado, como el que proporciona el muro exterior de la Torre de Londres. Durante el siglo XIV, en gran parte como resultado de la decadencia del feudalismo , [9] la construcción de castillos fuertes comenzó a declinar, en favor de estructuras más ligeramente fortificadas a menudo descritas como casas señoriales fortificadas . [10] En el extremo norte de Inglaterra, donde las condiciones seguían siendo inestables, se siguieron construyendo edificios fortificados hasta el siglo XVI, no solo por los ricos y poderosos sino por cualquiera con los medios adecuados, como defensa no contra grandes ejércitos, sino contra los notorios Border Reivers . Muchos tomaron la forma de la torre de pele , una versión más pequeña y modesta del torreón del castillo, [11] y muchos de estos aún sobreviven, a menudo incorporados en edificios posteriores.

Los castillos se diferenciaban de las fortificaciones anteriores en que generalmente eran residencias privadas fortificadas. Por lo general, un castillo era la residencia de un señor feudal, que proporcionaba al propietario una base segura desde la que controlar sus tierras, [12] y también un símbolo de riqueza y poder. Las estructuras fortificadas anteriores, como el burh sajón o el castro de la Edad de Hierro , proporcionaban defensas públicas o comunales, [13] al igual que las murallas de las ciudades o pueblos medievales . Los numerosos fuertes romanos de los que sobreviven ruinas en Gran Bretaña se diferenciaban por ser de naturaleza completamente militar; eran campamentos o fortalezas del ejército romano . Los romanos también construyeron murallas de ciudades o pueblos en Inglaterra, que todavía se pueden ver, por ejemplo, en Silchester .

En el siglo XVI, el papel de las fortificaciones había cambiado una vez más con el desarrollo de la artillería capaz de atravesar incluso gruesos muros de piedra. En el reinado de Enrique VIII , los temores de invasión [14] llevaron a la construcción de una serie de nuevas fortalezas a lo largo de la costa sur de Inglaterra, [15] conocidas como los fuertes de los dispositivos o castillos henricianos . Estos fueron diseñados para usar y defenderse de la artillería, y dado que no eran residencias privadas, sino fortificaciones nacionales, no poseen lo que los historiadores de la arquitectura han llegado a ver como las características definitorias de un castillo. [16] No obstante, son visiblemente similares a un castillo, ya que son compactos, con muros almenados, torretas bajas y, a veces, un torreón; y fueron la última generación de fortalezas en Inglaterra en ser conocidas como castillos, mucho antes de que los historiadores de la arquitectura comenzaran a argumentar que no deberían serlo. [17] Uno de ellos, el castillo de Pendennis , fue uno de los últimos bastiones realistas en caer ante los parlamentarios durante la guerra civil inglesa , obligándolos a rendirse tras un asedio de cinco meses por hambre. A medida que el papel del castillo como fortaleza declinó en el período medieval tardío, su papel como residencia se volvió cada vez más importante. Castillos como Herstmonceux fueron construidos con fortificaciones aparentemente diseñadas más para exhibir que para fortalecer, [19] lo que implica una mayor evolución en el papel y el concepto del castillo, pasando menos a ser un medio para imponer el poder y más bien a ser un símbolo de su posesión, un castillo que se convirtió en una gran residencia que proclamaba el estatus de su propietario. Una vez que las fortificaciones se volvieron completamente redundantes, se hizo cada vez más raro en Inglaterra que los edificios nuevos se describieran como castillos, en contraste con Francia, donde las casas de campo continuaron siendo conocidas como châteaux .

Los castillos, que ya no eran necesarios como fortalezas, si no se abandonaban, fueron adaptados y modernizados a lo largo de los siglos para que fueran más adecuados para su uso continuo como residencias: [20] se insertaron grandes ventanas en los muros defensivos, como en Lumley ; se demolieron o redujeron los muros exteriores para abrir las vistas desde el interior, como en Raby ; se construyeron nuevas áreas residenciales para mejorar y ampliar el alojamiento, como en Windsor . Algunos castillos fueron restaurados después de caer en ruinas, como Bamburgh ; [21] otros, como Belvoir , fueron demolidos y reconstruidos, conservando poco o nada de la estructura original. [22] En los siglos XVIII y XIX especialmente, muchos castillos sufrieron "mejoras" por parte de arquitectos como Anthony Salvin , y en este período se desarrolló una moda para construir casas completamente nuevas al estilo de los castillos, y que se conocerían como castillos. [23] [24] Entre ellos se encontraba el castillo de Peckforton , construido por Salvin: un edificio tan auténtico en su recreación de un castillo medieval que ha sido descrito como posiblemente la última casa fortificada seria construida en Gran Bretaña. Alcance y exclusiones

Es poco probable que una lista de castillos en Inglaterra sea completa, porque nunca habrá un acuerdo total en todos los casos sobre si los restos de un edificio son los de un castillo, si un lugar determinado es el sitio de un castillo o si un edificio sobreviviente debe considerarse un castillo. [26]

Tal vez porque el castillo se ha convertido en el tipo de fortificación más conocido, muchos sitios de fortificaciones anteriores al siglo X se han conocido como castillos. La mayoría de ellos son castros de la Edad de Hierro. Entre los más conocidos se encuentran el castillo de Abbotsbury , el castillo de Barbury , el castillo de Bratton, el castillo de Cadbury , el castillo de Dore , el castillo de Chûn , el castillo de Liddington , el castillo de Maen , el castillo de Maiden y el castillo de Uffington , [27] mientras que muchos más aparecen en la Lista de castros de Inglaterra . No todos los sitios fortificados medievales están incluidos en la lista actual. También se excluyen las iglesias con torres defensivas, como Ancroft , Burgh by Sands , Edlingham , Garway , Great Salkeld y Newton Arlosh , así como otros sitios eclesiásticos fortificados como la Abadía de Alnwick , la Abadía de Battle , la Abadía de Thornton , el Priorato de Wetheral , la Abadía de Whalley y la Abadía de St Mary's, York . Algunas de las torres de pele del norte de Inglaterra están incluidas, pero los edificios fortificados más modestos conocidos como bastles no, aunque la distinción entre ellos no siempre está del todo clara. En el período post-medieval, la distinción entre los verdaderos castillos y los castillos simulados posteriores se difumina debido a la medida en que los castillos medievales fueron adaptados y reconstruidos. En Greystoke se construyó un nuevo castillo que incorporaba una torre de vigilancia medieval; [30] en Thurland se construyó un nuevo castillo a partir de las ruinas del antiguo; [31] en Belvoir se demolió el antiguo castillo y se construyó uno nuevo. [22] La construcción de castillos simulados podría verse como la conclusión lógica de un proceso ya evidente en castillos como Herstmonceux o Tattershall , donde el aspecto de castillo del edificio se estaba convirtiendo más en una apariencia que en una fortaleza.
