El Salón del Automóvil de Detroit , anteriormente conocido como Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Norteamérica ( NAIAS ), [ 1 ] es un salón del automóvil anual que se celebra en Detroit , Michigan. Celebrado en Huntington Place (antes Cobo Center) desde 1965, [ 2 ] es uno de los salones del automóvil más grandes de Norteamérica y es ampliamente considerado como uno de los eventos más importantes de la industria automotriz . [ 3 ] [ 4 ]
La feria está organizada por la Asociación de Concesionarios de Automóviles de Detroit (DADA) y, desde hace muchos años, se celebra anualmente en enero. Generalmente, está abierta al público general durante una o dos semanas, precedida de presentaciones para empleados del sector y medios de comunicación, y una gala benéfica de etiqueta para recaudar fondos para organizaciones benéficas locales que ayudan a niños.
Historia
En 1899, William E. Metzger ayudó a organizar el Salón del Automóvil de Detroit, el segundo de su tipo, después del Salón del Automóvil de París de 1898. [ 5 ] En 1907 se celebró un salón del automóvil en Detroit, en el Beller's Beer Garden del Riverside Park, y desde entonces se ha celebrado anualmente, excepto entre 1941 y 1953. Durante las primeras décadas de su existencia, el salón se centró únicamente en el ámbito regional. En 1957, los fabricantes de automóviles internacionales expusieron por primera vez. [ 6 ]
En 1987, la DADA propuso que la feria se internacionalizara. [ 7 ] Los miembros de la DADA viajaron a lugares como Europa y Japón para intentar convencer a quienes presentaban sus nuevas marcas o vehículos en esos países de que llevaran esas presentaciones al Salón del Automóvil de Norteamérica. [ 7 ] Ese intento resultó exitoso; el Salón del Automóvil de Norteamérica pasó a llamarse Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Norteamérica en 1989. [ 7 ] El NAIAS fue el primer (y, hasta 2006, único) salón del automóvil en los Estados Unidos sancionado por la OICA . [ 8 ]
Desde 1965, el espectáculo se ha celebrado en Huntington Place (antes Cobo Center), [ 7 ] donde ocupa casi 1 millón de pies cuadrados (93 000 m²) de superficie . Antes de celebrarse en Huntington Place, el espectáculo se celebró en otros lugares conocidos del área metropolitana de Detroit, como el Light Guard Armory, el pabellón de Wayne Gardens y el recinto ferial estatal de Michigan . [ 9 ]
La asistencia récord se registró en 2003, con 838.066 asistentes. [ 10 ] En 2009, la asistencia fue de 650.517. [ 10 ] En 2016, hubo 815.575 asistentes con entrada, tras alcanzar los 803.451 en 2015. [ 10 ] En 2004 y 2005, el preestreno benéfico atrajo a 17.500 personas a 400 dólares la entrada y recaudó un total de 7 millones de dólares. Más de 800.000 personas asistieron durante los días en que el espectáculo estuvo abierto al público general en 2018; se estima que el espectáculo genera unos ingresos de más de 500 millones de dólares para la economía local. Audi , BMW y Mercedes-Benz no estuvieron presentes en la edición de 2019, tras las recientes ausencias de otros fabricantes de lujo como Porsche , Jaguar , Land Rover y Volvo . [ 11 ]
En 2018, se hicieron planes para trasladar la exposición de enero a junio a partir de 2020, con la esperanza de atraer más visitantes y agregar eventos al aire libre, [ 11 ] con planes para una "plaza del automóvil" alrededor de las avenidas Woodward y Jefferson , además de la exposición interior en el TCF Center. [ 12 ] Un festival al aire libre conocido como "Motor Bella" iba a preceder a la exposición, que exhibiría superdeportivos europeos . [ 13 ] La edición de 2020 fue cancelada debido a la pandemia de COVID-19 , durante la cual el TCF Center fue utilizado como hospital de campaña por FEMA . [ 14 ]
En 2020, debido a la persistencia de la pandemia, se planeó trasladar la feria de 2021 de junio a finales de septiembre. [ 15 ] Sin embargo, la edición de 2021 también se canceló. Los organizadores del NAIAS celebraron Motor Bella en el M1 Concourse de Pontiac, Michigan, como reemplazo parcial. Este evento al aire libre para entusiastas se llevó a cabo del 21 al 26 de septiembre. El director ejecutivo, Rod Alberts, declaró: «No podemos ignorar las importantes interrupciones causadas por la pandemia y su impacto en los presupuestos. Por ello, ofreceremos una experiencia increíble a los medios de comunicación, la industria automotriz y el público de una manera rentable». [ 16 ]
Para las ediciones de 2022 y 2023, el salón regresó al centro de Detroit y se celebró en septiembre. [ 17 ] Con la edición de 2025, el salón volvió a enero y se renombró nuevamente como el Salón del Automóvil de Detroit. [ 1 ] [ 18 ]

2026
La exposición pública de 2026 se celebró del 17 al 25 de enero, con eventos para los medios de comunicación y la industria los días 14 y 15, y una presentación benéfica (con una actuación de Robin Thicke ) el día 16. [ 19 ]
2025
En 2025, el espectáculo volvió a su fecha anterior de enero; [ 1 ] como resultado, no se realizó ningún espectáculo en 2024. [ 20 ] El espectáculo público de 2025 se llevó a cabo del 11 al 20 de enero, con los preestrenos para medios y organizaciones benéficas el día 10, [ 21 ] este último con una actuación de Flo Rida . [ 22 ]
Al igual que en 2023, la feria de 2025 se celebró íntegramente en el interior de Huntington Place. Ford , General Motors , Kia , Stellantis , Toyota y Volkswagen volvieron como expositores de pleno derecho; [ 23 ] y BMW , Honda , Hyundai , Ineos , Mazda y Mercedes-Benz estuvieron representados por exposiciones organizadas por concesionarios locales, [ 24 ] con Ineos haciendo su primera aparición en el Salón del Automóvil de Detroit. [ 25 ] Los vehículos de alta gama y exóticos se exhibieron en The Gallery, una sección aparte también programada por concesionarios locales. [ 26 ]
La feria de 2025 incluyó cuatro pistas de prueba en el recinto ferial: la Powering Michigan EV Experience, que regresaba y presentaba vehículos eléctricos de BMW, Cadillac , Chevrolet , GMC y Rivian (en el debut de esta última en el Salón del Automóvil de Detroit); [ 25 ] la nueva pista Detroit Grand Prix, con vehículos eléctricos y eléctricos de gasolina de Buick , Ford, Honda, Mazda y Volkswagen; y los circuitos todoterreno Ford Bronco Built Wild Experience y Camp Jeep, que regresaban en las exhibiciones de sus respectivos fabricantes. El salón de 2025 presentó pocas novedades en vehículos, en parte debido a la disminución de la popularidad de los salones del automóvil en Norteamérica y en parte debido a que coincidió con el Consumer Electronics Show , donde se presentaron varios vehículos conceptuales y de producción, además de mostrarse tecnología y conceptos para interiores de vehículos. [ 27 ] Los únicos vehículos nuevos que se mostraron fueron de Ford, que reveló el prototipo Mustang RTR y la edición Mustang GTD Spirit of America en una conferencia de prensa aparte antes del evento del 9 de enero. 2023
La edición de 2023 de la feria abierta al público se celebró del 16 al 24 de septiembre, con la presentación para la prensa el día 13 y la presentación benéfica (con una actuación de Jennifer Hudson ) el día 15. [ 29 ] Cabe destacar que su celebración coincidió con el inicio de la huelga de 2023 del sindicato United Auto Workers ( UAW ), que tenía como objetivo a Ford , General Motors y Stellantis , los tres expositores más importantes de la feria. El UAW organizó una manifestación frente a Huntington Place la noche de la presentación benéfica, pero no realizó piquetes ni pidió un boicot de los consumidores a la feria. [ 29 ]
Para 2023, la feria volvió a su formato anterior completamente bajo techo. Los tres fabricantes de automóviles con sede en Detroit exhibieron, junto con Kia , Toyota y Volkswagen . [ 30 ] Subaru declinó regresar para la feria de 2023, [ 31 ] mientras que Honda y Hyundai estuvieron representados en exhibiciones organizadas por sus concesionarios del área de Detroit. [ 32 ] [ 33 ] Al igual que en 2022, los fabricantes de automóviles no participantes estuvieron representados por exhibiciones más pequeñas de sus automóviles en una sección separada del recinto ferial. La feria de 2023 presentó la Powering Michigan EV Experience, una gran pista de pruebas interior en la parte trasera del recinto ferial, en la que los asistentes viajaron en nuevos vehículos eléctricos de GM, Ford, Volkswagen, BMW y Tesla . [ 30 ] La pista incluía una franja de aceleración de 300 pies y un recorrido serpenteante para demostrar el manejo de los vehículos. [ 35 ] [ 36 ] Los recorridos de demostración todoterreno separados de Ford y Jeep, así como el recorrido de la camioneta Ram, regresaron de la feria de 2022. 2022
En 2022, el NAIAS completo regresó a Huntington Place, con la exposición abierta al público del 17 al 25 de septiembre, precedida por la presentación para la prensa el día 14 y la presentación benéfica el día 16. La presentación para la prensa contó con la presencia del entonces presidente de los Estados Unidos , Joe Biden , [ 39 ] y la presentación benéfica incluyó una actuación de Nile Rodgers & Chic . [ 40 ]
La edición de 2022 presentó un diseño renovado, con las exhibiciones principales en el interior del recinto ferial de Huntington Place y otros eventos de apoyo al aire libre en la cercana Hart Plaza . [ 41 ] Stellantis , Ford , General Motors , Toyota y Subaru fueron los únicos fabricantes de automóviles con exhibiciones importantes en el recinto ferial, mientras que Volkswagen tuvo una exhibición más pequeña en el vestíbulo de Huntington Place. [ 42 ] En reconocimiento al Jeep ducking , Stellantis alquiló el Pato de Goma más Grande del Mundo para la feria, que se encontraba en la plaza frente a Huntington Place. [ 43 ] Muchos fabricantes de automóviles no participantes, como Nissan, Hyundai y Mercedes-Benz, estuvieron representados por vehículos nuevos en exhibición en el recinto ferial, pero sin una exhibición de marca. Tras su paso por Motor Bella, se instalaron pistas de prueba interactivas en la sala de exposiciones, donde se ofrecían paseos en vehículos Ford y Stellantis, incluidos con la entrada. La pista de Ford contaba con una zona de aceleración, utilizada para demostrar la potencia de la F-150 Lightning , y una gran colina que mostraba las capacidades todoterreno del Bronco . El salón de 2019 se llevó a cabo del 19 al 27 de enero en el Cobo Center [ 55 ] y se inauguró con el descenso de un Shelby GT500 2020 desde el techo del Cobo Center. [ 3 ] Se lanzaron 30 autos en las presentaciones previas, en comparación con los 69 de 2018. [ 56 ] Entre varios autos, se exhibieron nuevas versiones del Kia Soul . Otras atracciones importantes incluyeron el Shelby GT500 2020. Bryan Herta recibió el trofeo Baby Borg de las 500 Millas de Indianápolis de 2011 durante el evento, que coincidió con la promoción del regreso de la Serie IZOD IndyCar a Detroit a finales de junio. También se le entregó una réplica del Baby Borg a Suzie Wheldon, la viuda del piloto ganador de la carrera.

Una nueva sección llamada "Electric Avenue" exhibió vehículos eléctricos de todo el mundo, incluyendo algunos participantes del Automotive X-Prize . Saab , Hummer , Infiniti , Suzuki y Porsche no asistieron a la feria de 2010. Two major awards are presented at the auto show: the EyesOn Design Awards for Design Excellence,[279] and the Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year Award, which was founded in 1994. At the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards, awarded in the preview period of the auto show, around 55 automotive journalists serve as judges. They evaluate "value, innovation, design, performance, safety, technology and driver satisfaction."[59]
EyesOn Design Award winners
- 2004: Winners were the Mazda Kabura concept for "Aesthetics & Innovation", the Ferrari FXX prototype for "Functionality", and the Chevrolet Camaro (fifth generation) model for "Concept Implementation".[279]
- 2007: Winners were the 2007 Chrysler Nassau concept for "Aesthetics & Innovation", the Kia Kue concept for "Functionality", the 2008 Cadillac CTS (second generation) production model for "Concept Implementation", and the Jeep Trailhawk concept for "Spirit of Industrial Design".[279]
- 2008: The Cadillac CTS concept and the Chrysler ecoVoyager won the awards for concept car and truck. The 2009 Cadillac CTS-V and the BMW X6 received the Design Excellence awards for best production car and truck.[279]
- 2009: The Audi Sportback and the Cadillac Converj (ELR) won the "Excellence in Design Award" for concept vehicles debuted at the Detroit. The Audi R8 V10 and the BMW Z4 (E89) received the Design Excellence award for production vehicles.[279]
- 2010: The GMC Granite won the Excellence in Design Award for concept vehicles debuted at the Detroit show and the Audi A8 received the top honor for production vehicles.[279]
- 2011: The Porsche 918 RSR won for concept vehicles debuted at the Detroit show and the 2011 Audi A6 received the award for production vehicles.[280]
- 2012: The Lexus LF-LC won the "Excellence in Design Award" for concept vehicles debuted at the Detroit show and the 2013 Ford Fusion received the top honor for production vehicles.[281]
- 2013: The 2014 Cadillac ELR won the "Production Category" at the Detroit show while the Nissan Resonance concept and the Ford Atlas concept tied for the "Concept Category" award.[282]
- 2014: The 2015 Ford Mustang won "Best Production Vehicle" while the Volvo Concept XC Coupé took awards for both "Best Concept Vehicle" and "Best Use of Color, Graphics, and Materials".[283]
- 2015: The Ford GT won "Best Designed Production Vehicle" award while the Buick Avenir was selected as both "Best Concept Vehicle" and "Best Use of Color, Graphics, and Materials" and the Audi Q7 received Best Designed Interior.[284]
