El Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Ginebra era una feria automovilística anual que se celebraba en marzo en la ciudad suiza de Ginebra .
La feria tuvo lugar en el Palexpo , un centro de convenciones situado junto al Aeropuerto Internacional de Ginebra Cointrin. El Salón fue organizado por la Organización Internacional de Fabricantes de Automóviles y se consideró una importante feria automovilística internacional. [ 1 ]
Celebrado por primera vez en 1905, el Salón albergó casi todos los principales modelos de automóviles con motor de combustión interna de la historia, junto con coches propulsados por benceno y vapor de principios de siglo. Los superdeportivos exóticos suelen acaparar la atención durante sus debuts en la exposición. En ella se han anunciado prototipos, nuevos equipos, avances técnicos, colaboraciones internacionales , así como debates políticos y sociales. La exposición se consideraba un espacio equitativo para los fabricantes de automóviles del mundo, favorecido por el hecho de que Suiza carecía de una industria automovilística propia. [ 2 ]
El Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Ginebra no se celebró entre 2020 y 2023 debido a la pandemia de COVID-19 y su impacto económico en la industria automovilística mundial. El evento regresó por última vez en 2024.
En mayo de 2024, el comité organizador del Salón de Ginebra decidió cancelar el evento para 2025 y años posteriores, alegando una falta general de interés por parte de los fabricantes y la competencia de otros salones. Centró entonces su atención en el salón programado para noviembre de 2025 en Qatar. [ 3 ]

Después de la feria de 2024, los organizadores del salón del automóvil anunciaron su cierre. [ 5 ] Continuarán organizando el Salón del Automóvil de Qatar en Doha . [ 6 ] [ 7 ]

En julio de 2023, se anunciaron los planes para el Salón del Automóvil de Ginebra de 2024 como el último evento celebrado del 26 de febrero al 3 de marzo, con un formato revisado para reducir los costos para los expositores. [ 8 ] La edición de 2024 puso de manifiesto graves deficiencias organizativas, que resultaron en una menor participación o la ausencia total de algunos fabricantes. La pandemia de COVID-19 en curso, junto con las "incertidumbres en la economía global y la geopolítica" en 2022, llevaron a los organizadores a cancelar la sede suiza para 2023 (por cuarto año consecutivo) y a posponer la sede de Qatar hasta octubre de 2023. Otro factor que contribuyó fue la menor participación de los fabricantes en la sede suiza. [ 20 ] Las fechas para el Salón del Automóvil de Qatar se confirmaron del 5 al 14 de octubre de 2023. [ 21 ]
2021 y 2022
En 2021, los organizadores del Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Ginebra firmaron un acuerdo con el gobierno de Qatar para celebrar exposiciones bienales en Qatar durante el cuarto trimestre, junto con exposiciones anuales en Suiza durante el primer trimestre. [ 22 ]
Las exposiciones de 2021 y 2022 fueron canceladas debido a las continuas medidas por la pandemia de COVID-19 . La sede de Qatar iba a celebrarse en noviembre de 2022, pero se pospuso a 2023 por la misma razón. [ 23 ] [ 24 ] [ 25 ] La escasez mundial de chips también se citó como un factor en la cancelación de la sede de Suiza en 2022. [ 25 ]
2020
El 90.º Salón del Automóvil de Ginebra estaba previsto del 5 al 15 de marzo de 2020, pero se canceló debido a la pandemia de COVID-19. La decisión de Suiza de imponer un límite a las reuniones de más de 1000 personas se citó como motivo de la cancelación. [ 23 ] Fue uno de los primeros de muchos eventos automovilísticos importantes que se cancelaron debido a la COVID-19. [ 25 ]
